MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION EXTENDING DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF THE EXECUTIVE BUDGET

Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The next and last bill before me today is Introductory Number 259, sponsored at the request of our Administration by Council Members Weprin and Comrie.  This bill extends the deadline for the Administration's submission of the proposed Executive Budget and budget message to the City Council.  The bill also extends the dates of submission for various other budget reports and actions from the City Council, Borough Presidents, and the Independent Budget Office.

"This bill sets a deadline of May 4, 2006 for the Administration to submit the Executive Budget to the City Council, which represents an extension of eight days beyond the Charter requirement. The date by which the City Council must hold hearings on the Executive Budget will be extended to June 9, 2006.  The date for adoption of the Fiscal Year 2007 budget will be extended to June 13, 2006.

"This legislation is necessary to fully assess the fiscal climate and refine the Executive Budget proposal prior to submission.

"I would like to thank the Office of Management and Budget, the Law Department, and the City Council for their work on this bill."
