MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND POLICE COMMISSIONER KELLY ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF POLICE OFFICER ERIC HERNANDEZ

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly today announced the death of Police Officer Eric Hernandez. Police Officer Hernandez died today as a result of injuries sustained on January 28, 2006 after being assaulted and subsequently shot at a fast-food restaurant in the Bronx. Hernandez, age 24, was a two-year veteran of the Police Department assigned to the 52nd Precinct.

"Today, New York City mourns the death of Police Officer Eric Hernandez," said Mayor Bloomberg. "Officer Hernandez was a young and vibrant police officer dedicated to serving the people of New York City. His death weighs heavily on our hearts and minds. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hernandez family and also with his colleagues and friends during this difficult and tragic time."

"On behalf of all the members of the New York City Police Department I want to extend my condolences to the family of Police Officer Eric Hernandez," said Commissioner Kelly. "His valiant struggle over the last several days was emblematic of the grit and determination he demonstrated as a police officer and as an athlete. He fought courageously to the very end, and he will be missed by us all."

Officer Hernandez, a resident of White Plains, was an active member of the NYPD Football team, serving as the starting running back this past season. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, and joined the Police Department on  July 1, 2004.
