STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON THE CONTINUING DECREASE IN NEW YORK CITY’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

“The economy of New York City continues to surge as the unemployment rate fell to 5.5% in June, marking the first time since 2001 that the unemployment rate has been less than 6% for four months in a row.  Our Administration is focusing on creating economic opportunity for all, and we will continue investing in neighborhoods in all five boroughs to create good jobs, to build affordable housing, and to drive down crime to make our streets safer and protect our quality of life.  Working together, our City is making a strong recovery from a recession, reflected in the fact that the unemployment rate is substantially lower today in every borough than it was a year ago and that our economy is now outpacing the nation’s.”
