STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON THE DEATH OF FORMER U.S. REPRESENTATIVE SHIRLEY CHISHOLM

"The recent passing of Shirley Chisholm is a loss for New York and for our entire country.  From her work in early child development to her involvement as a member of Bedford Stuyvesant Political League and the League of Women Voters, to her service as a member of the New York State Assembly, and as a member of Congress representing Bedford Stuyvesant, Shirley Chisholm fought for social justice and equality for all Americans.  She made history by becoming the first black woman elected to Congress and once there she kept the concerns of her constituents front and center.  A true trailblazer, she challenged the conventional wisdom of the day by making a run for the presidency and she forged bipartisan relationships for the betterment of her community and the causes that were closest to her heart.  Shirley Chisholm will be missed by all but leaves a legacy for all of us to be proud of."
