Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Parks & Recreation  Commissioner Adrian Benepe today kicked off the opening of all New York City's outdoor pools at Astoria Pool in Queens. All of the City's 53 outdoor pools are free and will officially be open to the public beginning this Saturday, June 26, 2004 through Labor Day, September 6, 2004.  The Mayor was joined by former Olympians Chris Jacobs (Swimming: 1988 USA) and Christina Han (Swimming: 1988 South Korea), Leslie Bush (Swimming: 1964, 1968), children and members of the community who took the first plunge of summer into the pool.

"The summer heat is upon us and it is the perfect time to open New York City's pools," said Mayor Bloomberg. "Our outdoor pools and beaches are excellent places for New Yorkers to cool off during the dog days of summer, and I encourage all New Yorkers use them often and use them safely."

"Summer is our favorite season at the Parks Department and we're pleased to open our pools once again this summer to New Yorkers," said Commissioner Benepe.  "Our outdoor pools are a free and great way to cool off and get some exercise this summer. Our trained lifeguards will be on hand all summer to keep New Yorkers safe, but swimmers should always use caution and only swim when a lifeguard is on duty."

This year's event included a free cookout provided by Western Beef, and prepared by the Art Institute of New York City and Chef Brendan Keenan.  Carvel also provided a healthy treat of non-fat ice cream and Snapple gave away free Snapple drink and summertime essentials like towels, visors, and beach umbrellas.  Power 105 radio station provided entertainment.

Hours of operation for the pools are 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., seven days a week. For pool locations call 311 or visit www.nyc.gov/parks where you can also view a calendar of activities.  New York City is also home to 14 miles of public beaches, which are also open through Labor Day, September 6, 2004. Beach hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when beaches and pools are closed or when a lifeguard is not on duty.
