MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG AND CORRECTION COMMISSIONER MARTIN F. HORN PRESIDE OVER GRADUATION CEREMONY FOR 100 NEW CORRECTION OFFICERS

9 Uniformed and 1 Civilian Staff also Promoted

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Correction Commissioner Martin F. Horn and Chief of Department Robert N. Davoren today presided over a graduation and swearing-in ceremony for 100 new probationary correction officers and 10 new promotees today.  The ceremony was held at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. 

"It is my pleasure to welcome our newest graduates to the nation's best correctional agency," said Mayor Bloomberg. "They join the ranks of dedicated officers who have kept order and safety in our City's jails, reduced prison violence by an astounding 96% since 1995 and built a department that is setting national standards for performance.  I congratulate our newest Correction Officers on becoming New York's Boldest and know they will serve with honor in this critically important work."

"I want to thank the Mayor for his consistent support and recognition of Correction's key role in the law enforcement community.  It is that support that enables us to add today's class of 100 fine new officers to the ranks of those 280 correction officers who graduated just two weeks ago," said Commissioner Martin F. Horn.  "Not only are they New York's boldest, but they are also the most skilled jail officers in the country. Along with today's deserving new promotees, we look forward to serving with them."

Promotion ceremonies were also held today for an Assistant Commissioner, a Deputy Warden in Command and eight Deputy Wardens.  Sworn in were: Patricia Feeney, Assistant Commissioner for Environmental Health; George Okada, Deputy Warden in Command, Criminal Justice Bureau; and Deputy Wardens Diane Carn, Artemio Colon, Mark Cranston, Robert Cripps, Joandrea Davis, Thomas Hall, Kathleen Mulvey and Willie Taylor.

Chief of Department Robert N. Davoren remarked, "This new class of officers provides a strong, vital addition to today's Correction workforce. They have successfully completed the highest quality of training for correctional professionals in the nation and their addition can only help us build on the recent management successes we have enjoyed."

The Class valedictorian was Correction Officer Christina Noon, 29,who received the highest final overall grade of the graduating class at 97.75%.  Each of the 100 probationary Correction Officers completed a 16-week training course at the New York City Correction Academy located in Middle Village, Queens, which includes training in security, investigations, use of force, interpersonal communication, chemical agents, first aid and health.  The graduates will be assigned to various commands on Rikers Island.
