MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG AND GAY MEN'S HEALTH CRISIS ENCOURAGE NEW YORKERS TO PARTICIPATE IN 19TH ANNUAL AIDS WALK NEW YORK

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) Executive Director Ana Oliveira are encouraging New Yorkers to participate in the upcoming 19th Annual AIDS Walk New York, the world's largest fundraising event supporting efforts to combat the continuing AIDS crisis.  The event will take place on Sunday, May 16th and begins and ends at the east side of the Sheep Meadow in Central Park.  The announcement was made on the Mayor's radio show, "Live from City Hall with Mayor Mike and John Gambling" on WABC 770AM.

"For nearly 20 years AIDS Walk New York has raised much needed funds to help fight this dreaded disease," said Mayor Bloomberg.  "I am pleased to join the new Executive Director of the Gay Men's Health Crisis and a member of the New York City Commission on HIV/AIDS to promote the AIDS walk.  The AIDS walk is a great way to spend a Spring day in New York while raising money for a good cause."

"Mayor Bloomberg's emphasis on health programs reminds all New Yorkers what we at GMHC have never been able to forget," said Oliveira. "The AIDS crisis is still with us, and we must continue the fight to treat those who suffer from HIV and AIDS, and prevent others from contracting the disease."

More than 40,000 participants took part in AIDS Walk New York last year, and more than $4 million was raised. In addition to GMHC, 40 AIDS service organizations in all five boroughs piggybacked on the AIDS Walk by sponsoring teams and keeping all the money raised by those teams with no administrative costs deducted by GMHC.

Many of the City's major corporations, non-profit groups and individuals, field teams for the day.  For more information, call 311 or (212) 807-WALK (9255) or visit www.nyc.gov or www.AIDSWalk.net
