MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG AND STATEN ISLAND BOROUGH PRESIDENT JAMES P. MOLINARO ANNOUNCE INTER-FAITH MEMORIAL SERVICE IN HONOR OF VICTIMS OF STATEN ISLAND FERRY TRAGEDY

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Staten Island Borough President James P. Molinaro today announced an inter-faith memorial service in honor of the victims of the Staten Island Ferry tragedy. The memorial service will be held at the St. George Esplanade at Staten Island Ferry Terminal at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 27th. The service, which will be open to the public, will be attended by families of victims, clergy, elected officials and members of the community.

“On Wednesday, we will come together to honor the lives of ten individuals who we lost in a tragedy that has caused immeasurable sorrow in every neighborhood on Staten Island, and throughout the New York City area,” said Mayor Bloomberg.  “I cannot even comprehend the grief families of those we lost must feel at this time.  It is important that they know that the City mourns with them and will support them through these difficult times.”

“Staten Island stands together in a spirit of hope and prayer as we pay tribute to those members of our community who perished or were injured aboard the Andrew J. Barberi ferry on October 15th,” said Borough President James P. Molinaro.  “It is my hope that the service will provide victims’ families with a sense of quiet solace, and they will derive a sense of unity from their friends and neighbors. Staten Island is a community that has suffered so greatly, yet we always stand together.”

The Brighton Heights Reformed Church will be an alternate location in case of inclement weather.
