MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG AND POLICE COMMISSIONER RAYMOND W. KELLY HONOR TWO FALLEN MEMBERS OF NEW YORK'S FINEST

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly today honored Detective Jaime Betancourt and Police Officer Disdale O. Enton, both of whom died in 2002 while ensuring the safety of their fellow New Yorkers, by unveiling a plaque in their memory and adding their names to the Memorial Wall at One Police Plaza.  Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Kelly honored the two fallen officers at the annual memorial service for those members of the Police Department who lose their lives while protecting the people of New York City during the previous year.  The families of Detective Betancourt and Police Officer Enton joined the Mayor and Commissioner at the ceremony.

“Today, we continue the very important tradition of honoring the men and women of the New York Police Department who give their lives to protect the lives of their fellow New Yorkers,” Mayor Bloomberg said.  “During their years at the NYPD, Detective Betancourt and Police Officer Enton made enormous contributions to the safety of our City, helping New York become the safest large City in the country.  We are forever grateful for their courageous service and sacrifice and we are proud to honor their memory as members of New York’s Finest.”

“Detective Jaime Betancourt and Police Officer Disdale Enton were exceptional members of the New York City Police Department,” Commissioner Kelly said.  “Their tragic deaths last year not only struck a heavy blow to their family and friends, but also deprived this Department of two of its finest officers. They will be remembered for their courage, kindness, and exemplary professionalism. Today, as we take time to remember these two men, we consecrate their names to our memorial wall so that we will never forget their contributions to this Department.”

Detective Jaime Betancourt was appointed to the NYPD on August 30, 1993, and was assigned to Transit District Bureau 11 in the Bronx.  In 1999, he was transferred to the Bronx South Initiative within the Narcotics Division, where he worked in undercover operations and was eventually promoted to Detective Third Grade.  Known for his distinctive laugh, his love of dancing, and his great sense of humor, Detective Betancourt died on March 31, 2002, at the age of 34.  Police Officer Disdale O. Enton was appointed to the NYPD on August 31, 1998, and was assigned to the 113th Precinct in Queens.  Known for his kindness to all people and his devotion to his family, community, and City, Police Officer Enton died on August 29, 2002, at the age of 34.
