MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG RECOGNIZES
DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD), in partnership with Queens College, today hosted a reception in commemoration of Disability Awareness Month by recognizing the contributions of people with disabilities in our City.  The reception honored the role and importance of individuals with disabilities, and highlighted their participation in the cultural community by displaying works of art realized by New York City residents and Queens College students with disabilities.  Deputy Mayor for Legal Affairs Carol Robles-Román, Executive Director for the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities Matthew Sapolin, President of Queens College Dr. James Muyskens, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin, as well as New York City officials, and community and business leaders joined the Mayor at Queens College.

“Disability Awareness Month is an opportunity to bring awareness to the contributions of people with disabilities, and this Administration is committed to ensuring that City life mirrors the diversity, spirit, talent and dedication of New York’s population,” said Mayor Bloomberg.  “The art displayed here tonight proves that creativity knows no barriers.” 

“Enhancing the awareness of the talent of people with disabilities in New York City is truly one of CUNY’s priorities,” said President of Queens College Dr. James Muyskens.  “We are honored to have the opportunity to join with the Bloomberg Administration and the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities in advancing this goal.  There is much to be learned from Disability Awareness Month and as a CUNY College, Queens College is honored to host this event, and will be continuing the campaign with more events to occur across CUNY campuses through out April.”

Mayor Bloomberg recognized The Theatre Development Fund, Inc. for their programs that offer sign language interpreted and open captioned performances and The Theater by the Blind Corporation for showcasing the vast abilities of persons with disabilities by creating an environment for blind and visually impaired individuals to participate in the wonderful experience of the stage.

The MOPD is responsible for developing City policies concerning people with disabilities, overseeing and assisting implementation of laws and serves as a liaison between the City and the disabled community.  For more information about MOPD visit: www.nyc.gov/html/mopd
