MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION
EXTENDING THE DISTRICTING COMMISSION

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Law

“The next bill before me is Introductory Number 372, sponsored by Council Members Comrie, Baez, Brewer, Davis, Jackson, Monserrate, Nelson, Stewart and Weprin.  Intro. 372 amends the Charter to extend the life of the current and future districting commissions.  The current districting commission’s term expires upon the adoption of a districting plan.

“This bill extends the life of the districting commission to sixty days after the date of the first general election for the Council following the adoption of the districting plan.  This extension is required to enable the districting commission to take all of the necessary steps to ensure that the districting plan is implemented.  Those steps include submitting the plan to the U.S. Department of Justice for pre-clearance and making any revisions to the plan that may be necessary to respond to a ruling or determination by a court or the Department of Justice.”
