MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION EXPANDING METROTECH BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The first bill before me today is Introductory Number 249, sponsored at my request by Council Members Weprin, Yassky, Comrie, Fidler, Nelson, Recchia and Stewart. This bill will increase the size of the Metrotech Area Business Improvement District (BID) located in Downtown Brooklyn to include the Brooklyn Renaissance Plaza, home to the Marriott Hotel and nearly one million square feet of Class A office space.  The Metrotech BID expansion will help to further promote business development and improve quality of life for the people who live and work in Downtown Brooklyn.

“The City’s Department of Small Business Services oversees the BID program.  BIDs are self-funded through assessments on property owners located within the BID and provide essential services such as public safety, sanitation, special events assistance, community outreach, economic development, assistance programs and streetscape improvements.  BIDs are a proven example of how public/private partnerships can promote economic development.

“While the City faces a difficult budgetary environment, it is important that we continue to focus on ways to improve the business climate in New York City.  A thriving Downtown Brooklyn is an integral part of the City’s economic revitalization and the Metrotech BID is a proven entity in creating and keeping jobs in the City.”
