MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG APPOINTS FORMER SENATOR DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN AND REPRESENTATIVE SUSAN MOLINARI TO PENNSYLVANIA STATION REDEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today appointed former United States Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and former United States Representative Susan Molinari to the Pennsylvania Station Redevelopment Corporation (PSRC). The Mayor's two appointments join the six-member board that oversees the development of the James A. Farley Post Office Building into the new Pennsylvania Station.

"Senator Moynihan and Representative Molinari will use their vast, varied and diverse experience to guide the development of this world-class transportation facility, reestablish our commitment to rail service and spur development of the West Side of Manhattan and it is a great pleasure to appoint such outstanding individuals," said Mayor Bloomberg. "Intercity rail service and Amtrack's Northeast Corridor are critical to the functioning of commerce, governance and tourism between Boston, New York and Washington DC and essential to New York City's long-term economic health. The grounding of our aviation system on September 11th demonstrated the importance of transportation redundancy to ensure homeland security and an enhanced Pennsylvania Station will build the capacity necessary for our nation's security."

"I am hugely honored by Mayor Bloomberg's appointment, not least, as I will be working once again with my old colleague, Susan Molinari," said Senator Moynihan. "From the first, we have all agreed that the recreation of Pennsylvania Station will make history. As with so much else, there was a setback after September 11th. But Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Pataki and Ambassador Gargano have seen this as a challenge more than a setback. Now history awaits."

Daniel Patrick Moynihan retired in 2000 as the senior United States Senator from New York and was first elected in 1976. He is now University Professor at Syracuse University and a Senior Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. In May 2001, President George W. Bush appointed him Co-Chair of the President's Commission to Strengthen Social Security. Senator Moynihan was the Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Committee on Finance, having earlier served as Chairman. A member of the Cabinet or sub Cabinet of Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford, Senator. Moynihan is the only person in American history to serve in the Cabinet or sub-Cabinet for four successive administrations. He earned his bachelor's degree (cum laude) from Tufts University, studied at the London School of Economics as a Fulbright Scholar, and received his M.A. and Ph.D. from Tufts' Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He has received 65 honorary degrees including a doctorate of laws from Yale University in 2000 and from Harvard University in 2002. Senator Moynihan is the author or editor of 18 books. In his tenure in the Senate, Moynihan secured more than $60 million in funding for the redevelopment of Pennsylvania Station.

"I'd like to thank Mayor Bloomberg for asking me to serve as part of the team assisting in revitalizing one of New York's most recognizable landmarks and one of our nation's most important transportation hubs," said Representative Molinari. "I look forward to once again working with my former colleague Senator Moynihan and the existing members of the Pennsylvania Station Redevelopment Corporation."

Susan Molinari is the President & CEO of the Washington Group and was a Member of Congress from 1990 to 1997. Representative Molinari was elected by her colleagues to the eight person Republican Majority Leadership, making her the highest-ranking woman in the Congress. Representative Molinari chaired the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's Railroad Subcommittee, which passed legislation to overhaul the nation's Amtrak passenger rail service. She was selected by GOP Presidential candidate Senator Robert Dole as Keynote Speaker at the Republican National Convention in San Diego in 1996. Prior to Congress, Susan Molinari was twice elected to the New York City Council, where she was Minority Leader. In 1997, she left Congress to co-anchor the team inaugurating CBS News Saturday Morning, where she conducted on-air interviews of national and international newsmakers. She is the co-author of the book Representative Mom: Balancing Budgets, Bill and Baby in the U.S. Congress (Doubleday, 1998). Ms. Molinari was selected as a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Politics/Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1998. Born and raised on Staten Island, Susan Molinari is a third generation public servant. Her grandfather was the first Italian-American immigrant elected to the New York State Assembly and she succeeded her father, Guy V. Molinari in Congress, who is the former Borough President of Staten Island.

The Pennsylvania Station Redevelopment Corporation was formed in 1995. It was created to coordinate the funding, management, and execution of conversion of the James A. Farley Post Office, located directly above the existing Pennsylvania Station platforms, into a new intermodal transportation facility. The Project is expected to create 7,600 jobs and over $65 million in tax revenues during construction, and establish ongoing economic growth with 1,600 new jobs and over $15 million in annual income and sales tax revenue once completed. Today, Pennsylvania Station is America's busiest passenger transportation facility, handling over 600,000 people daily - more than Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark airports combined. The new station will increase Pennsylvania Station passenger capacity by 30% and double the circulation space, serving Amtrak, commuter, subway, airport access, bus and taxi passengers. The six-member board is comprised of New York State appointees Charles A. Gargano, Chairman and CEO of the Empire State Development Corporation, and Chairman of the PSRC, and Maryanne Gridley, Executive Director for the NYS Dormitory Authority and Federal appointees Norman Minetta, Secretary of Transportation and Alan Rutter, Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration.
