MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SIGNS BILL EXPANDING EMPIRE ZONES OF SOUTH
JAMAICA IN QUEENS AND NORTH SHORE OF STATEN ISLAND
Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg
at a Public Hearing on Local Laws
"The two bills before me today are Introductory Number 179, sponsored
by Council Members Sanders, Oddo, Comrie, Diaz and Weprin at my request,
and Introductory number 180, sponsored by Council Members Sanders,
Oddo, Comrie, Diaz and McMahon at my request. These actions will enable
the State to amend the Empire Zone Legislation of the State of New
York to expand the Empire Zones of South Jamaica in Queens and the
North
Shore of Staten Island.
"The Empire Zone Program was established to benefit certain areas of New York that face long-term unemployment and poverty. The program was designed to stimulate private investment, business development and job creation through a variety of tax and other financial incentives. The two bills before me will help to continue the economic revitalization of South Jamaica and the North Shore. The bills will add 65 acres to the South Jamaica zone and approximately 8 acres to the North Shore zone. The North Shore expansion alone is expected to retain or create over 500 jobs. This benefit will be gained without any cost to the City.
"These bills
are prime examples of how my Administration is working to stimulate
and revitalize New York's economy while remaining fiscally responsible."
