MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ANNOUNCES
RELOCATION OF UNITED FEDERATION OF TEACHERS
HEADQUARTERS TO LOWER MANHATTAN

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced that the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) is relocating its headquarters from Park Avenue South to two adjoining buildings on Broadway near the World Trade Center site. Built in 1927, the building at 50 Broadway stands 37 stories tall and was renovated in the 1990s. The 19-story building at 52 Broadway was built in 1982 and is slated to construct a new 1,000-person auditorium. The buildings provide 740,000 combined square feet of space for offices, classrooms, and conference rooms, and will be utilized by the UFT and other tenants seeking to help reinvest in downtown Manhattan. UFT President Randi Weingarten, Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr., City Council Speaker A. Gifford Miller, City Council Member Alan J. Gerson, State Assembly Speaker Shedlon Silver, Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields, New York City Central Labor Council President Brian McLaughlin, and New York State AFL-CIO President Denis Hughes joined Mayor Bloomberg at the announcement.

"I am very pleased to announce that the UFT has agreed to move its headquarters to downtown Manhattan near the World Trade Center site," Mayor Bloomberg said. "The UFT's relocation will help revitalize lower Manhattan and shows that we can always learn more from our teachers. I applaud the UFT and the other parties that facilitated the move and I urge other organizations and businesses in New York City to follow their lead."

"The UFT is proud to be an integral part of the rebirth of lower Manhattan," Weingarten said. "It is the world's financial capital, the traditional heart of New York, and since September 11 the emotional soul of our country. New York City's public school educators want to demonstrate our confidence in and our commitment to lower Manhattan's future."

The real estate investment trust of Koll, Bren and Schreiber, LLP, currently controls 50 Broadway, while Jack Resnick and Sons, Inc., currently owns 52 Broadway. The firm Colliers ABR served as real estate consultant and broker in all transactions related to the relocation.
