Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced the appointment
of Marvin Markus as Chairman of the New York City Rent Guidelines
Board (RGB). The RGB is mandated
to establish rent adjustments for the nearly one million dwelling
units subject to the Rent Stabilization Law in New York City. The
Board holds a series of annual public meetings and hearings to consider
research regarding operating and maintenance costs, the cost of financing,
housing supply and cost of living indices which is produced by staff
and from testimony by owners, tenants, advocacy groups and industry
experts. The RGB publishes reports based on this research for use
by the public, other governmental agencies and private organizations,
and provides information to the public on housing questions.
"It is my pleasure to bring back Marvin Markus as Chairman
of the Rent Guidelines Board," said Mayor Bloomberg. "Since
his last tenure as Chairman, Marvin has made his mark in the world
of housing finance and brings a wealth of professional expertise and
personal commitment to this job."
Marvin Markus has held several senior management posts at firms including
Goldman, Sachs & Co., PaineWebber Inc., Kidder Peabody & Co.,
Inc., and Bear Sterns & Co. Prior to that, he worked at the NYC
Department of Housing Preservation & Development. Markus has served
as President of the Citizen's Housing and Planning Council and Chair
of the New York City Council Redistricting Commission.
Marvin Markus first served as Chair of the RGB from 1979 to 1984.
Markus grew up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn and earned a BA at Brooklyn
College and a Masters of Urban Planning at New York University. He
is married with two children.
The RGB consists of nine members, all of whom are appointed by the
Mayor. Two members are appointed to represent tenant interests, two
members are appointed to represent owner interests, and five members
(including the chairperson) are appointed to represent the general
public.
