Mayor Bloomberg, Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Commissioner Joseph F. Bruno and Department of Education (DOE) Deputy Chancellor Kathleen Grimm launch Ready New York for Kids, the latest addition to OEM’s preparedness campaign. As part of the City’s ongoing effort to encourage all New Yorkers to prepare for emergencies, OEM and DOE have created two Ready New York for Kids guides. Mayor Bloomberg announces the start of the first-ever housing subsidy program targeted to victims of domestic violence exiting the Human Resources Administration’s (HRA) domestic violence shelters. The Domestic Violence Work Advantage program will provide a rental subsidy for these families and for the first time will grant an extension for a period of six months after they obtain housing to secure employment while they recover from the trauma of abuse. Mayor Bloomberg signs an executive order that establishes a steering committee charged with reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in City owned buildings and operations by 30 percent over the next ten years.  This is one of the 127 initiatives that the Mayor announced in an Earth Day speech six months ago today as part of PlaNYC, his plan to create a greener, greater New York. As part of today’s announcement the Mayor also issued a PlaNYC Progress Report, which shows that work has begun on more than 80 percent of the other 126 initiatives.
