Eva Radke, Film Biz Recycling

Eva Radke April 1, 2009 - Eva Radke, founder and president of Film Biz Recycling, has a lot to be proud of. Since June 2008, Film Biz Recycling has diverted nearly 50 tons of materials from film and television productions and kept them out of landfills.

That figure surprised even Radke, whos devoted herself in recent years to help green the film industry here in New York City. Originally an art department coordinator, she grew weary of seeing how many items were thrown away after a production wrapped. Determined to do something about it, she first created Art Cube, an online community that tried to connect items destined for the dumpsters with local art departments instead.

Her efforts have since grown into Film Biz Recycling, which recently moved into a new, large location in Long Island City. There, Radke and her team of volunteers sort through the materials donated by films, television shows and commercials and find new homes for them at appropriate charities or at its reuse center, which rents out props to other productions.

Radke also has been a guest lecturer with the Made in NY Production Assistant Training Program, letting the PAs know the responsible green choices they can make on set and in the production office, like ensuring power strips are turned off at the end of the day.

Radke recommends hiring a green PA or another member of the crew whose main responsibility would be to reduce waste for the production. Money can be saved in the simplest ways, she said, like eliminating water bottles. Its also important to change the language. Instead of dumping fees, make it recycling fees, she explained. Its a mindset.

Getting to zero waste is possible, she said.
