David Moy, Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting

David Moy November 1, 2010 - David Moy, the Supervisor of Field Operations with the Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, is this years recipient of the Mayors Excellence in Customer Service Award. I was shocked and humbled to receive the award, he said, because I felt the whole office deserved the award.

Describing his job as being the ears and eyes for the office, Moy strives to help productions meet their needs while ensuring that local neighborhoods remain film friendly and are inconvenienced as little as possible when productions shoot on location in the City.

When interacting with customers, I always try to remember in the back of my head how important our agency and the production industry are to the health of the economy of the City, he said.

As part of his job, Moy visits sets throughout the five boroughs to monitor production footprints. When I arrive on set, my first priority is safety, Moy said. I look to see that the cables are covered and that there are safe pedestrian walkways. He also walks the entire footprint of the set to make sure the production is adhering to its permits. If hes called to a set to rectify a problem, he works with the location department and the NYPD Movie/TV Unit officers that may be assigned to the production to quickly resolve the situation.

Customer service goes beyond our office, said Moy. I try to instill it into the productions and stress to them that, with the amount of filming thats taking place in the City, they need be cognizant of what theyre doing and be film friendly when theyre shooting on location.

Moy, a native resident of Queens, spent a few years working in locations before joining the Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting ten years ago. The experience gave him a unique insight into what productions are looking to achieve while filming in the City.

Its always fun watching a stunt, said Moy. A particularly memorable sequence he was on hand to monitor was the evacuation scene in I Am Legend, which took place under the Brooklyn Bridge. It was amazing to see the coordination of so many different agencies accomplish that scene, he remembered.

Im happy to represent the City and our office while on set, he said.
