Bike to School Day
This past May, DOT partnered with Bike New York to create the City's first Bike to School Day at Brooklyn's William Alexander School MS 51. Bike New York held a week of workshops to educate students leading up to the big day. For Bike to School Day Bike New York and DOT staff created two escorted rides with pick-up spots along the way so the middle schools could "bike pool." See photos and a short film about the event.
On October 6th DOT will hold another Bike to School Day with the same school. DOT and Bike New York will use these experiences to create a guide for schools citywide who would like to hold their own Bike to School days.

Bike Smart Dont be a Jerk!
Increasingly, longtime New York cyclists are telling the NYCycles staff that they have a real problem with the lack of manners and respect that they see from their fellow riders. Wrong way riding (aka salmoning, sidewalk riding and blowing through intersections, regardless if you have the light or if grandma is trying to cross, are all habits that irk and endanger cyclists, pedestrians and drivers alike.
Want to ride right? Check out Bike Smart – DOT's new guide to urban cycling. The pocket-sized guide contains a handy list of traffic laws pertaining to cyclists, as well as info on safe ways to make left turns, how to use the new protected lanes, bike boxes and more. Download a copy today. DOT is also distributing the guides at community meetings and bike events throughout the city.
Over the past four years DOT has added over 250 new miles of bike lanes, and thousands of new bike racks to make the City friendly for cyclists. Now it's time for cyclists to be friendly for the city.

Quick Tip |
||
Car-free greenways and parks are great places for kids to learn to ride and gain confidence. The NYC Cycling Map shows these locations as green lines. Some of the most popular destinations include the Hudson River Greenway, Central Park and Prospect Park. In Queens there’s also Forest Park and the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway Greenway and in Bronx the Hutchinson River Parkway Greenway, the Pelham Parkway Greenway and the Bronx River Greenway are all great options. |

Safety Tip |

When riding with children, ride in a line with the children in the middle of the adults. If there’s only one of you, the adult should be at the rear, keeping an eye on all the children in front. |
