Selections from the Archive
The Design Commission maintains extensive archives that document its work since it was founded in 1898. In 2013, the Commission launched a long-term preservation project to digitize the oldest and most fragile materials to increase public access and preserve the originals in appropriate archival conditions. The collection includes works by important artists and architects that shaped the city in the late 19th to early 20th Centuries and provides a unique view into the history of New York City's public works. Selections from the archives will be uploaded regularly to our Flickr site.

City Hall, City Hall Park, and Brooklyn Bridge Park

Organized by the Public Art Fund, We the People is a full-scale replica of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi’s Statue of Liberty, recreated by the artist Danh Vo in about 250 individual pieces. Vo’s segmented version is faithful to the original’s copper material and fabrication techniques. However, he never intends to assemble the statue. Instead, We The People invites us to experience this world-famous icon on a human scale and to reflect on the meaning of liberty from multiple perspectives. The installation in City Hall highlights two of these details, while the 50 accompanying pieces in City Hall Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park represent the largest public presentation of this artwork in the United States to date. Addressing broader issues of cultural identity and migration, We The People invites audiences to consider the symbolic resonance of the Statue of Liberty in the city that is its home.
