An Auctioneer License is required to sell merchandise by public auction.
The license is valid for two years and expires on June 15 of years that end in an even number. |

The application for this license (the Basic Individual License Application) requires information regarding the applicant, including applicable identification numbers (such as SSN or ITIN); contact information; employer information; history of criminal and / or civil charges; and any DCA license history of the applicant and his / her relatives.

Photo Identification (ID) in one of the following forms: a driver's license or a non-driver's ID issued by a State Department of Motor Vehicles; a license or permit issued by a government agency; a passport; an alien card / green card; or if applicant is a City, State or Federal employee, an employee identification card.

A copy of a $2,000 surety bond (or third party bond), properly signed. The copy of the bond must name the Department of Consumer Affairs as the Certificate Holder. The applicant’s name and address must be exactly the same on all documents. A copy of the bond receipt showing that the bond has been paid in full and does not expire before the end of the licensing period must also be submitted. The Granting Authority to Act Form is required only if the license application will be filed by someone other than the applicant.

Current color passport-size photograph of license applicant. Applicants can be photographed in the DCA Licensing Center at no cost. Please note that applicants can upload an image file when submitting the license application online. The uploaded image file must be digital passport photo quality. A digital camera with a resolution of 1 mega-pixel will be more than adequate.

Character Certificates, available at the link above, must be completed by three New York City residents who are unrelated to the applicant and who have known the applicant for at least two years.

Auctioneer applicants must be fingerprinted at the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) Licensing Center, located at the address below. The applicant must provide acceptable photo identification (ID) at the time the fingerprints are taken. Acceptable forms of ID are listed above in the second Prerequisite. EXCEPTIONS: Any person who currently holds or held within the past three years a DCA license that required fingerprinting, or has submitted fingerprints to the DCA Licensing Center within the past three years does not need to be fingerprinted.

Click the Apply Online link above to complete and submit the following forms online: Basic Individual License Application, Child Support Certification Form, and Granting Authority to Act Form (if applicable). The application must be completed and submitted in one sitting as applications cannot be saved. Please ensure the information listed under Prerequisites, above, and a major credit card are readily available.

As part of the online application submission, it is possible to upload the required documents listed under Prerequisites, above (i.e., $2,000 surety bond, bond receipt, three character certificates, and a photograph). Required documents that are not uploaded during online submission must be submitted via fax, e-mail, or in person to the DCA Licensing Center, located at the address below, within five business days of successfully filing the application online.

After submitting an application online, the applicant must visit the DCA Licensing Center, located at the address below, within five business days to be fingerprinted.

Complete the required forms, as identified in the Prerequisites section above. These application forms can be downloaded by clicking the links in the Application Materials section above.

File all documentation at the address below between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Licenses are valid for two years and expire on June 15 of years that end in an even number. Operation without a current license is subject to penalties. Before the license expires, DCA will send a license renewal application to the licensee.

$400: License Fee for applicants who file for a new auctioneer license from June 16 of years that end in an even number to December 15 of years that end in an even number. Note: Online applicants will need to pay a Non-Refundable Service Fee of $8.
$300: License Fee for applicants who file for a new auctioneer license from December 16 of years that end in an even number to June 15 of years that end in an odd number. Note: Online applicants will need to pay a Non-Refundable Service Fee of $6.
$200: License Fee for applicants who file for a new auctioneer license from June 16 of years that end in an odd number to December 15 of years that end in an odd number. Note: Online applicants will need to pay a Non-Refundable Service Fee of $4.
$100: License Fee for applicants who file for a new auctioneer license from December 16 of years that end in an odd number to June 15 of years that end in an even number. Note: Online applicants will be required to pay the prorated fee for the license period about to end ($100) plus the fee for the new two-year license period ($400), for a total of $500. Paying both fees, online applicants will not need to renew the license until June 15 of the next year that ends in an even number. Online applicants will need to pay a Non-Refundable Service Fee of $10.
