Description:
Educational institutions, self employed educators or programs that wish to offer courses to train or qualify an individual for a Certificate of Fitness for a Fire Safety / Emergency Action Plan Director must first be accredited by the NYC Fire Department.
Prerequisites [back to top]  
1.  The name and address of the educator, educational institution or program offering the training course.
2.  Compliance with the General Requirements for Accreditation for Schools, available in the AdditionalInformation section above.
3.  The name and contact information, including a telephone number of a designated representative for the person or institution seeking accreditation.
4.  A detailed outline of the course curriculum. Please read the Specific Requirements for Accreditations for Fire Safety/ Emergency Action Plan Director, available in the Additional Information section above, when developing the curriculum.
5.  Provide the description of teaching methods to be used to present each topic (e.g. lectures, discussions, practical skills exercises and audio-visual materials), copies of all written materials to be distributed including sample examinations.
6.  A list of instructors, documentation of their qualifications (including a resume), and a list of subjects each instructor will teach.
7.  A list of tuition fees, study material fees and any other fees that the students will be charged.
8.  Provide any affiliations held by the institution with other educational institutions trade unions or professional organizations.

    Steps to Apply Offline:
    1.  Submit all required documents, as described in the Prerequisites section above, and the evaluation fee, listed below, in person or by mail to the address listed below.
    2.  FDNY will review the materials submitted.
    3.  Approved instructors or institutions will receive their approval letter by mail and will be able to begin teaching immediately. Those who are not approved will be sent a letter with an explanation of why they were not accredited. These applicants can work on improving their proposals and can reapply.
     
    Operating Requirements [back to top]  
    1.  This accreditation of training courses must be renewed every 1 year in person or by mail. The Fire Department will send a renewal application 30 days before the end of each year in December. This application includes the updated course information, course schedule, and curriculum or personnel changes.
    2.  To renew, a renewal application and the required payment, must be submitted in person or by mail to the address below, attention Certificate of Fitness Unit. Mail-in payments can be made by check or money order. Cash and credit card payments are only accepted in person.
    3.  Institutions that do not renew their accreditation by the end of each year will be removed from the list of approved schools and the students from the school will not be allowed to take the test.
    4.  Any training course changes such as personnel, course schedule (dates, times and location), course curriculum, and teaching methods require approval from the department prior to being implemented.
    5.  In order to grant renewal, FDNY will evaluate the effectiveness of any training course, including consideration of the success of its students in achieving passing grades in determining whether to maintain accreditation.
