CUNY Citizenship Now! Provides Free Services to Help with U.S. Citizenship
CUNY Citizenship Now! offers free, high quality, and confidential immigration law services. Their attorneys and paralegals provide one-on-one consultations to assist individuals and families with immigration related issues. CUNY Citizenship Now! is the country's largest university-based citizenship and immigration law service provider, and they operate nine centers across the five boroughs. The free immigration services are available in multiple languages and are open to all members of the community--CUNY students and non-students.

500 Teachers and Growing
A growing community of instructors has been using We Are New York in their ESL classrooms since 2009. Teachers incorporate a variety of classroom activities and project-based learning with the videos with tremendous success. Nearly 13,000 students have watched WANY in the classroom, and 97% of teachers rated the series as "Very Effective" or "Effective" in helping students improve their English. The number of teachers and students using We Are New York continues to expand rapidly.

New Classroom Materials for Teachers

Teachers have created lesson plans and other resources to help adults learners improve their English using We Are New York. There are lessons based on the health and education issues covered in the series. There are lessons that use drama and role play to practice language skills and others that will help you develop your students’ leadership skills. There are also lessons for low-level learners, something many teachers have requested. Finally, you can access three pictures (i.e., screen captures) from each episode that are great for pre-viewing and post-viewing exercises.

We Are New York in the Classroom

Teachers across the city are using We Are New York in the classroom. Teachers have found the show to be a great conversation starter for most students. The authentic stories of immigrant life in New York appeal to learners of all levels and of every nationality. The show also supports instruction by communicating important information that students need to know.

We Are New York Professional Development Day

Over 100 ESL teachers attended the We Are New York Professional Development Day. Through a variety of workshops, participants learned exciting new ways to use the series. Nearly every teacher responding to the evaluation survey indicated they were planning to use the lesson plans and resources presented in the workshops. In particular, 92% of teachers who had never used WANY before reported they were “likely” or “very likely" to use it in their classrooms.
