According to the New York State DMV, there are more than 2 million vehicles operating in New York City. Enforcing traffic regulations on such a large scale is a massive undertaking. As Vision Zero attempts to improve enforcement on all types of vehicles, it is important to consider a wide variety of approaches.

The New York City Police Department has enhanced its efforts to enforce laws on dangerous driving. Frequent initiatives are being made to target drivers committing the following driving infractions:

  • Speeding
  • Failure to Yield to Pedestrians
  • Signal Violations
  • Improper Turns
  • Disobeying Signage
  • Phoning/Texting while Driving

Weekly NYPD patrol borough TrafficStat meetings are held by the Chief of Transportation at Police Headquarters to review motor vehicle, bicyclist and pedestrian crash data. Ordinarily, three police precincts are chosen to appear at the TrafficStat meetings. The precinct's Executive Officer presents the traffic issues and strategies for review, comments and questions. Other agency representatives including the New York City and New York State Department of Transportation, TLC, Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority also attend the TraffficStat meetings. TrafficStat focuses on engineering, enforcement and education as the keys to traffic safety.
