In 1868, three years after the end of the Civil War, New York State was the first state to officially recognize Memorial Day, then known as Decoration Day. May,1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson declared Waterloo, New York as the "birthplace" of Memorial Day. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a National Holiday. This is a day when our nation honors our comrades killed in action. We are a nation at war. New York City has had over 30 service members killed in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Please remember our brothers and sisters killed in action on this day, and remember the ones currently serving in the war on terrorism. Also, please check the links below for information on the Memorial Day Parades and commemorations that will be taking place around the five boroughs.

The month of May brings Fleet Week to New York City! We will be celebrating the 18th Annual Fleet Week in New York City. There will be opportunities for you to take tours of the visiting ships that will be in Manhattan and Staten Island. Please check the links below for tour dates and times and for information on other upcoming activities.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADES AND CEREMONIES

The Great Kills Memorial Day Parade will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 21, 2005. The parade will start at 225 Cleveland Avenue at Durant Avenue near the Myra S. Barnes Intermediate School in Staten Island. For more information contact John Esposito at (718) 317-6220.

The Glendale Memorial Day Parade will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 30, 2005. Kick off is at the intersection of Myrtle and Cooper Avenues, in Glendale, Queens. Call Julius Landherr at (718) 366-0121 for more information.

The Pelham Memorial Day Parade will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 30, 2005 in Pelham, Bronx. The parade begins on the esplanade, proceeds along Wolfs Lane and finishes on Fifth Avenue near Veterans Memorial Park. The Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum will host a Memorial Day Commemoration at 11 a.m., Monday, May 30, 2005 at Pier 86, 12th Avenue and 46th Street in Manhattan. Please visit the Museum's Web site at www.intrepidmuseum.org for more information.

The Kings County Memorial Day Parade will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 30, 2005. Kick off is at 79th Street and 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Call Edward Cush at (718) 853-7359 for more information.

The Staten Island Memorial Day Parade will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 30, 2005. The parade begins at the intersection of Forest Avenue and Hart Boulevard. Please call Lee Covino at (718) 816-2034 for more information.

American Legion Inwood Post #581 will observe Memorial Day with a ceremony and parade at 12 p.m., Monday, May 30, 2005 at Dyckman St. and Broadway in Northern Manhattan. A wreath laying ceremony will take place at the 9/11 cross and memorial located at Good Shepherd Parish, at the corner of Broadway and Isham Street at 12:45 p.m. For more information contact Thomas Hoare at (212) 567-1501.

Fleet Week 2005, New York City's salute to our nation's sea services will kick-off Wednesday, May 25, 2005 as numerous U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard ships enter New York Harbor and travel up the Hudson River during the annual Parade of Ships celebration. WMRW Soul Production presents a Concert and Dance Extravaganza, featuring the legendary Intruders, to benefit the My Comrade Fund for injured service members and the WMRW Veterans' Assistance Fund, 8 p.m., Friday, May 27, 2005, at the Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom, 311 West 34th Street in Manhattan. The Manhattan Vet Center, in conjunction with the Hunter College School of Social Work is hosting the 22nd "Hidden Client" Conference, 9 a.m., Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at 129 East 79th Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. This year's conference entitled PTSD Re-Deployed: New Wars, New Challenges will feature numerous workshops for veterans to include an Iraq and Afghanistan War Veterans Discussion panel.
