The Partnership
New York City and Madrid became Sister Cities in June 1982 under the administrations of Mayor Edward I. Koch of New York City and Mayor Enrique Tierno Galvan of Madrid.

The Partnership is based on a history of friendship between Spain and the United States and strong diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties between the two cities. Over 20,000 Spaniards live in New York City. New York City has been honored with visits from both the President and the King of Spain. During his visit in 1997, King Juan Carlos received the World Statesman Award from the Appeal of Conscience Foundation in New York and participated in the opening of the Juan Carlos I Center for Spanish Studies at New York University. New York City's international business community is directly associated with Madrid, as Madrid is host to the national headquarters of most multinational corporations operating in Spain.

Program Exchanges
One of the premier program exchanges between the two cities, the annual "Madrid Week in New York/New York Week in Madrid" celebrated each country's history and culture. The program included museum art exchanges, Spanish and American history lectures, student music and dance performances, a New York photo exhibition, and a Spanish festival in Central Park.
