Global Partners Junior - New York City Global Partners


	Global Partners Junior is an award-winning student after-school program that fosters global understanding and communication by connecting 9-12 year old New Yorkers with their international peers around the world on the internet. Students work on topics relevant to all cultures: urban society, city parks and building a sustainable city. Participants post and read each other’s messages on a secure internet forum, share digital media projects, video greetings and information about themselves and their communities. Global Partners Junior won the 2006 Sister Cities International Innovation Award for Youth & Education.

	PROGRAM UPDATES: Summer 2009 In May and June students in New York City and around the world celebrated a successful year of cross-cultural exchange focused on ecology and conservation. For the final project each group of students designed public green spaces inspired by international parks. In NYC, groups presented their designs to the community at public exhibitions. The YMCA, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation also recognized the completion of this year's curriculum 'Exploring My Environment' with parties and displays of student projects. The events were: May 27, at the NYCHA Drew Hamilton Community Center in Harlem; June 2 at the Westside YMCA on the Upper West Side; and June 3 the Parks Department's Al Oerter Recreation Center in Flushing Meadows Park. International guest speakers from Beijing, Mumbai, Paris and Singapore visited New York City classrooms to teach students how to navigate the Paris Metro, use chopsticks, and dance to Bollywood songs!

	Winter 2009 Global Partners Junior programming kicked off in October 2008 at 25 New York City locations in all five boroughs. A Global Partners Junior class in Jerusalem created a snail/human hybrid home using digital image software.
