The Saeko Ichinohe Dance Company bridges Eastern and Western as well as contemporary and ancient cultures. The Company has worked with the Sister City Program since 1985 to highlight and strengthen the relationship between Tokyo and New York, bringing Japanese and American dance styles together in bursts of color, movement and rhythm. In 2001, Saeko Ichinohe's company traveled to Tokyo to perform "A Tale of Genji", a 1,000 year old Japanese story.
Since 1998, the company has awarded the Cultural Bridge Award to recognize artists whose work connects Japanese and American culture. In March, this award was presented to Toshiko Akiyoshi, Jazz Pianist, and two other artists. Past honorees have included Masayuki Suo, director of the film, "Shall We Dance", Kurt Masur, musical director of the New York Philharmonic, and Hisashi Yamada, master of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
