Lajos (Louis) Kossuth, leader of a Hungarian rebellion in 1848, arrived in the United States in 1851 with fellow exiles after travelling by boat to many European cities and eventually the United States. In this painting, Kossuth is seen in the parade that followed his landing at what is now Battery Park on December 6, 1851. Kossuth was treated to numerous parades, banquets and receptions, and was so popular that fashionable young men began to wear imitations of his wide-brimmed, soft felt hats. In 1928 the city's Hungarian community erected a statue memorializing him.
