On October 16, 2005, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) will authorize hybrid-electric vehicle models for hack-up and use as medallion taxicabs. The hybrid-electric vehicles that are currently available, and which would then comply with the TLC's vehicle specifications (Taxicab Vehicle Specifications - Rule 3-03.1), include the following: 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid, 2006 Mercury Mariner Hybrid, 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, 2006 Toyota Highlander, 2006 Toyota Prius, 2006 Honda Civic hybrid, 2006 Honda Accord hybrid, and the 2006 Lexus RX 400H.
Currently, there is a high level of overall consumer demand for hybrid-electric vehicles that may lead to longer than expected delivery times. The TLC recommends that vehicle owners take this into account when planning the purchase of a hybrid-electric vehicle for use as a medallion taxicab.
If you have questions regarding hack-up procedures for hybrid-electric vehicles, please contact the TLC's Safety and Emissions Division at 718-267-4599.
The TLC has prepared an estimated cost/benefit analysis of six hybrid-electric vehicle models, and how they compare to the Ford Crown Victoria. The analysis also includes various incentives that exist for the purchase of hybrid-electric vehicles. The new specifications and cost/benefit analysis are available for viewing on the TLC's web site at www.nyc.gov/taxi (click on TLC News, and then Public Notices)
