All TLC Drivers(Medallion, Street Hail Livery and For Hire Vehicle) must attend and complete a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) Training Course to maintain their license. A license will not be issued or renewed if the course is not taken.
- New applicants are required to take the WAV training course after filing an application with the TLC.
- Renewing licenses must take the WAV training course by the expiration date on their license.
Please see Chapter 80 for more details.
At the end of the training, you will receive a certificate of completion from the training course provider. You must show this to the accessible vehicle owner before driving the vehicle, and you need to keep a copy with you in the vehicle. As a driver of a wheelchair accessible taxicab, you must help a wheelchair passenger to and from the sidewalk curb. You must also secure the passenger and his/her belongings in the vehicle. Time for unloading may not be charged.
After you complete WAV training, you may be eligible for payments from the TLC of $0.50 cents for each trip you complete in a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. Visit the Taxi Improvement Fund (TIF) page to learn more and enroll in the TIF program.
