Renew Your TLC Driver License

How to Renew Your TLC Driver License

To renew your TLC driver license you must first make an online payment and then email or mail-in all other required documents. TLC does not accept in-person renewal applications, payments, or document submission.

Driver License Renewal Requirements for Each License Type

TLC Driver License (Medallion, Street Hail Livery and For Hire Vehicle) Renewal Requirements

Need to Submit? How to Submit?
Pay fee online Yes Pay $252 online by credit card, debit card or e-check. To get your renewal license on time you need to complete all license requirements at least 30 days before your license expires. If you don’t, you may not receive your new license before the old one expires.

If you fail to renew your license by the expiration date you will have an additional 180 days to complete all your renewal requirements.

No additional extension will be granted.

Your license will remain expired until TLC processes and approves your late renewal application.

After renewal you will be sent a notification that you owe a $25.00 late fee. The late fee can be paid at www.nyc.gov/lars.
Failure to comply will result in the suspension of your license until the late fee is paid.
Drug test Yes Take drug test 90 or fewer days before your license expiration date. The fee for the drug test is $26. The testing center will automatically tell TLC whether you passed. Location options are here.
NYS DMV certified defensive driving course Yes, if the course you have on file with TLC was taken more than 3 years before your license expiration date Email or Mail TLC proof of completion of a course completed within three (3) years prior to your license expiration date.
Attend TLC Driver Education and pass exam Only FHV drivers who applied for a license between March 20, 2015 and December 19, 2015 will have to attend TLC Driver Education and take the exam prior to renewal. Course fees vary by provider. If you have taken the course and passed the exam for the TLC 24 hour course from any provider on the list, you do not need to retake it. Find a TLC-authorized school.
Wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) training Yes, if you have not taken it before Complete WAV training. The school will inform TLC when you have completed course. Course fees may vary by provider.
Medical form Yes, if you have not submitted it in the past. This is a one-time requirement. Submit the TLC medical form by email or mail to above address.
Watch sex trafficking awareness video Yes Watch the training video. No document to submit.
DMV abstract Yes, but only if you do not have a NYS DMV driver license Email or mail an original out of state driver record that is dated no more than 90 days before your license expiration date to the addresses above. Contact your state's DMV to obtain your record.
Pay parking tickets Yes, if you have any Pay parking tickets.
Pay traffic tickets Yes, if you have any Check with the DMV for more information on paying traffic tickets.
Pay TLC fines Yes, if you have any Pay online by credit card, debit card, or e-check.
TLC Driver (FHV only ) – 19A status Only if you drive a stretch limousine Nothing to submit to TLC, but to avoid delays you should check with your employer that he or she has provided proper documentation to the DMV to maintain your 19A status
