Mayor Bloomberg Announces Taxi Fleet to Be Fully Hybrid By 2012
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced that as part of PlaNYC, the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) will implement new emissions and mileage standards for yellow taxicabs that will lead to a fully hybrid fleet by 2012 - the largest, cleanest fleet of taxis on the planet. The new standards will be phased in over a four-year period and will reduce the carbon emissions of New York City's taxicab and for-hire vehicle fleet by 50% during the next decade, and will also save individual operators an average of $10,000 a year in fuel costs.
Starting in May 2007, New York City taxicabs will begin to be equipped with an assortment of customer service-intensive technology-based improvements that will include an interactive electronic passenger map and information screen, and credit/debit card acceptance. Other enhancements will assist in the recovery of lost passenger property, and provide drivers with both business opportunities and important emergency information while electronically replacing the handwritten trip sheet.
Wear NYC: TLC and other City merchandise are offered online
For the first time, the City will offer a variety of officially licensed TLC merchandise as well as other City products on one authorized website. The new online shop was launched on Thanksgiving Day by Mayor Bloomberg as part of the City’s new ‘Wear NYC ’ marketing campaign. In time for the holiday season, the site will allow visitors to purchase official merchandise from a total of seven municipal agencies. Anyone with internet access now has the chance to show their pride and support by owning a piece of NYC. A portion of proceeds will go to promoting and protecting the City.
