| Soriano
Joins 30-30 Club
On
Saturday, August 17th, New York Yankee Alfonso
Soriano homered to become the first second baseman
in Major League history to join the exclusive
"30-30 Club." Soriano, 24, already has
stolen 34 bases this season, the other category
on which the club is based. Soriano joins
Bobby Bonds as the only Yankee players to reach
the 30-30 plateau, while also tying the team record
for home runs by a second baseman (Joe Gordon,
1940).

Giambi
- 2002 HR Derby Champ!
On Monday, July 8th, 2002, New York Yankee Jason
Giambi, defeated the league's best sluggers to
become the 2002 Home Run Derby Champion at the
All-Star festivities. With 11 home runs in the
first round, Giambi advanced as the field of eight
was cut in half. In the second round, Giambi managed
to capture a sudden death victory against Chicago
White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko. In the finals,
Giambi cruised past Sammy Sosa by a score of 7-1
in front of a sold out Miller Park in Milwaukee.
This was the first Home Run Derby winner for the
Yankees since Tino Martinez in 1997.

Yankee
All-Stars
The Yankees sent six players to the All-Star Game
on July 9th. Starting for the American League
team was Jorge Posada at catcher, Jason Giambi
at first base, and Alfonso Soriano at second.
All three have been major contributers to the
team's success and earned their spots on the starting
roster. The team also sent shortstop Derek Jeter,
third baseman Robin Ventura, and the team's closing
pitcher, Mariano Rivera. The game ended in a 7-7
tie when the league commissioner decided to end
the game after 11 innings.
