Rocket Wins Sixth Cy Young Award!

On Thursday, November 15th, the American League announced that it had named Yankee pitcher Roger Clemens the recipient of its 2001 Cy Young Award. The award, given to the top pitcher in both leagues, is Clemens’ sixth in his Hall of Fame career (the most by any player in Major League history). This season, Clemens finished with a record of 20-3 and an ERA of 3.51. As this is his first time winning the award as a Yankee, Clemens also becomes the first winner of the award for the club since Ron Guidry won it in 1978. Mark Mulder of the Oakland Athletics was the runner-up when the voting results were released, as Clemens received 122 total votes to Mulder’s 60. Yankee starter Mike Mussina finished fifth in voting this year with two votes. Clemens will now chase down the 300-win milestone (he currently has 280 wins) entering next season. Despite turning 40 years old next year, Clemens has tallied 88 wins over the past five seasons, which is the most by any American League pitcher.
Rivera Breaks Yankee Save Record!

Congratulations to Mariano Rivera who on September 24th, 2001, recorded his 47th save, a team single-season record. Dave Righetti had 46 saves in 1986.
Clemens Becomes First MLB Pitcher to Start Season 20-1!

On September 21st, 2001, Roger Clemens became the first pitcher to win 20 of his first 21 decisions. This accomplishment only adds to his Hall of Fame resume listed below.

Tied Major League record with 20th consecutive victory on June 1, 1999 vs. Cleveland.
Picked up strikeout No. 3,000 on July 5, 1998 vs. Tampa Bay
Tied his own Major League record of 20 strikeouts in a 4-0 win on Sep. 18, 1996 at Detroit.
Tossed one-hit shutout vs. Cleveland in a 6-0 win on Sept. 10, 1988.
Won Game 7 of the 1986 ALCS to record first postseason win.
Set Major League record with 20 strikeouts in a 4-1 win over Seattle on April 29, 1986.

Clemens Makes History on Opening Day

On a day already filled with history-the raising of their 26th World Championship banner-Roger Clemens was determined to add some history of his own to the New York Yankees’ Opening Day of the 2001 season. On Monday, April 2nd, Roger Clemens started for the Yankees against the Kansas City Royals as he looked to become the American League Strikeout King. After pitching 8 1/3 innings, Clemens finished with five strikeouts, enough to pass Walter Johnson, a.k.a. “The Big Train”, on the all-time list as the Yankees defeated the Royals by a score of 7-3. With the win, Clemens also moved into sole possession of 34th place on the all-time wins list. Clemens now has 3,509 strikeouts for his career placing him seventh on the Major League strikeout list.
Congratulations to Paul O'Neal who batted his 2000th hit against Baltimore on 5/3/01.
