Game 1 - A's Defeat Yanks in Series Opener
On Tuesday, October 3rd, the Yankees began their postseason drive
for their 26th World Championship. In Game One, the Yankees jumped
out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Oakland Athletics, the AL West Division
Champions and the hottest team in baseball, rallied in the late innings
to win by a score of 5-3. Roger Clemens, the game's losing pitcher, did
not allow a hit until the third inning, but left the game after six
innings trailing by a score of 4-3. The A's star of the game was an
unlikely one in Ramon Hernandez, the club's catcher. Hernandez went 2
for 4 with 2 RBI after hitting a go-ahead double in the sixth inning.
Oakland never relinquished the lead after that point.

Game 2 - Pettitte Shows His Stuff As Bombers Tie Up Series !
After losing eight straight games, including Game 1 of the American League
Division Series, Joe Torre felt it was time to make some changes. Switching
up the batting order, changing the designated hitter, and starting the Yankees
most consistent pitcher, Torre discovered the formula for victory that tied
up the series at one game apiece. As Andy Pettitte pitched 7 and 2/3 innings of
shutout baseball, the Yankee bats came alive as they went on to score 3
runs in the 6th inning and get on the scoreboard. On a light note, with Mariano Rivera
looking to close out the 8th inning for New York, a slow rolling grounder was delivered to second
baseman Luis Sojo, who tripped on his own two feet and could not make the final out. After the
inning, and after the game, smiles returned to the faces of Yankee players, who as it had seemed, had
not smiled for the last month. Game 3 is scheduled for Friday night in New York.

Game 3 - "El Duque" wins sixth straight in postseason to put Yanks up 2-1 !
Orlando Hernandez began the game on the mound for the New York Yankees, throwing 130 pitches, completing 7 innings, and allowing
only two runs off of four hits. With the defensive support coming from both the Yankee infield and outfield, Mariano Rivera came
in to the game to make the save in the eight inning. With his save, Mariano Rivera tied Dennis Eckersley's record of 15 postseason
saves. The Yankees scored four runs in the game by taking advantage of the sloppy defensive play of the Oakland Athletics. Yankee
pitching kept Oakland's No. 2-7 hitters 0-for-19 in Game 3 and left the Yankees with a 2-1 series lead going into Game 4.
|
Game 4 - Bombers get Bombed in Yankee Stadium !
Behind the outstanding pitching of rookie Barry Zito, and a powerful
offense, that rocked Roger Clemens for six runs in only five innings,
the young Oakland Athletics defeated the Yankees 11-1 to tie the series
2-2. Zito, the 22-year-old lefty, kept the Yankees off balanced with an
array of off speed pitches that complemented his above average fastball.
Olmedo Saenz provided Zito and the Oakland bullpen all the run support
they needed with a first inning 3-run home run that silenced the Yankee
faithful and kept the A's pennant hopes alive.

Game 5 - Yankees Play Like Champions to Win Series !
On Sunday, October 8th, following a grueling cross country flight,
the Yankees faced a confident Oakland A's in the final game of the
American League Division Series. Andy Pettitte was given a six run
cushion as their struggling offense pounded Game One winner Gil Heredia
in the first inning. Pettitte, pitching on only three days rest, was not
sharp as the A's rocked him for ten hits and five runs in only 3 2/3's
innings. Fortunately for the Yankees their bullpen was outstanding as
Mike Stanton, Jeff Nelson, El Duque, and Mariano Rivera shut down the
powerful Oakland offense and preserved a 7-5 victory. The Yankees begin
the ALCS on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.
