Game 1 - LONG and Hard Loss for Yanks.
In what was expected to be a pitchers duel between the two best the American League had to offer, both the Yankees and the A's started the Division series with 10 hits each. Jason Giambi launched one of the longest homeruns of the season for the A's, who beat Roger Clemens in Game 1 of a best-of-five series for the second straight year. Roger Clemens struggled all night and was pulled after four innings with a hamstring problem.
Terrence Long blasted solo home runs off of Roger Clemens and Sterling Hitchcock and young Mark Mulder showed no mercy in his first postseason appearance, as he only allowed New york one run.
|
Game 2 - The Bronx Bombers?!?
Tim Hudson started the game for the A's and held the Yankees to one hit in the first five innings. Andy Pettitte pitched well but gave up a solo homerun in the fourth that served as the winning run. The big story of this game was three major opportunities for the Yankees in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings that lead to no runs. The lack of hits with men in scoring position stunned the team and stunned the crowd as the Yankees went down 2-0 in the game and the series. The Yankees now must win three games in a row in order to advance to the American League Championship series.
|
Game 3 - The Moose Lets Loose!
Mike Mussina pitched seven scoreless innings and only allowed four hits in a must-win game 3 for the Yankees. Jorge Posada hit a game-winning solo homerun as the Yankees fought off playoff elimination with a victory over Oakland by a score of 1-0. Derek Jeter made an amazing cut-off throw to home that threw out the possible tieing run, and Yankee hopes that the series might go to a game five were still alive.
|
Game 4 - Ladies and Gentlemen, The NEW YORK YANKEES!
Bernie Williams supplied the hitting power for the Bronx Bombers as he drove in five runs to tie the AL division series two games apiece. El Duque Orlando Hernandez gave up eight hits in 5 and 2/3 innings, but limited Oakland to only two runs. The Yankee bats came to life in this game as doubts of the Yankees chances were quickly dismissed. The final score of the game was 9-2, and the Yanks now head home to face the A's in Yankee Stadium.
|
Game 5 - Happy Birthday, From Oakland
Heading back to Yankee Stadium for game 5, not many Yankee fans thought they would be going to the stadium for a deciding game in the divisional series. Roger clemens took the mound and pitched well against the A's, and the Yankee bats were there to back him up. The story of the series clincher were three errors recorded by the A's that allowed 4 runs to score. The young Athletic ball club that had shown so much poise in the four games prior cracked under the pressure in what was a very loud and excited Yankee Stadium. During the game, Derek Jeter passed Pete Rose on the all-time post-season hit list with 86. David Justice put an exclamation point on the win with a solo homerun in the fifth to set the final score at 5-3 in favor of the Bronx Bombers.
