New York Yankees Playoffs
Yanks Beat Mariners and Head to WORLD SERIES!
The defending champions continued to shine during the postseason by winning their 38th American League Pennant in team history. After coming back from a two-game deficit in a best-of-five series and defeating a determined Oakland Athletic team in the Division Series, the New York Yankees stunned the regular season’s best team in the American League Championship Series. The Seattle Mariners, the American League West Division Champions who tied a major league record by winning 116 games in the regular season, proved to be no match for the Yankees as they lasted only five games and lost the series four games to one.

The Yankees will now face the National League Champion Arizona Diamondbacks in the World Series. Game One will take place in Arizona on Saturday, October 27th at 7:30 p.m. on Fox.

Game 1 - New York Begins The Battle with Seattle!
In Game One of the ALCS, a sellout crowd of 47,644 packed Safeco Field to watch their Mariners try to continue their magical season. It was the Yankees who would supply the magic on this evening. Andy Pettitte led his team with a stellar performance on the mound by pitching eight innings and allowing only one run on three hits. Paul O’Neill accounted for two of the Yankees’ four runs on the night as he belted a two-run homer into the left field seats during the fourth inning. That was more than enough for the Yanks as Mariano Rivera came on to shut the door and preserve Andy Pettitte’s ninth win in the postseason (9-5). The loss was Mariner starter Aaron Sele’s fifth in his postseason career (0-5).
Game 2 - Yanks Return Home with Commanding Lead
On Thursday, October 17th, the New York Yankees continued to prove to the baseball world that they are the team to beat in the postseason. Despite not being the team with the 116-win season, New York has nonetheless put the Seattle Mariners in a difficult position. The Yankees defeated Seattle by a score of 3-2 and took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Mike Mussina led the charge by allowing just four hits and two earned runs over six innings. The Yankees were able to look to Ramiro Mendoza and Mariano Rivera to complete the six-hitter and secure the win. Freddy Garcia, one of the Mariners’ top pitchers, took the loss after pitching on just three days’ rest. The Yankees now head home to Yankee Stadium where they will try to close out the ALCS and win their 38th American League Pennant in team history. Game Three will take place on Saturday in New York.
Game 3 - Mariners Strike Back!
On Saturday, October 20th, the Mariners showed the Yankees that they had no plans of going quietly. Despite falling behind by a 2-0 deficit on Bernie Williams’ first-inning home run, the Mariners saw the momentum shift into their favor. With two outs in the inning, Bret Boone popped a fly ball into shallow left field. A diving Chuck Knoblauch was unable to hold onto the ball as the Mariners capitalized by tying the game. Over the next four innings the Mariners added 12 runs, the most runs scored against the Yankees in 285 postseason games. The final score of the game was 14-3 as Seattle now had cut the Yankees lead to one game in the in best-of-seven series. Game Four will take place on Sunday night, as Roger Clemens will take the mound against Seattle’s Paul Abbott.
Game 4 - Storybook Ending for Soriano!
On Sunday, October 21st, a sold-out Yankee Stadium witnessed one of the most memorable games of the postseason thus far. Roger Clemens and Paul Abbott went head-to-head on the mound as they both pitched five innings. Abbott pitched no-hit ball despite allowing eight walks, while Clemens allowed four walks and only one hit. As a result, both pitchers were taken out in the fifth inning due to wildness. As it came down to the bullpens, Bret Boone broke the scoreless tie in the eighth inning with a solo home run off of Ramiro Mendoza. However, New York came right back in the bottom of the eighth when Bernie Williams launched a solo home run of his own off of Mariner reliever Arthur Rhodes to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs and a runner on first, Alfonso Soriano, the Yankee’s rookie second baseman, blasted a home run over the right-centerfield wall. Soriano's home run was the fourth game-winning home run for the Yankees in ALCS play. The win gave the Yankees a commanding 3-1 lead as they look to win the series on Monday night in the Bronx.
Game 5 - Defending Champs win the Battle with Seattle!
Game One winner Andy Pettitte was on the mound matched against Seattle's Aaron Sele as New York tried to clinch the American League Championship and avoid a return trip to the Pacific Northwest. Pettitte threw six scoreless innings as the Yankees defeated the Mariners 12-3 en route to their 38th American League Pennant and fourth consecutive appearance in the Fall Classic. In the third inning, after scraping together two runs, Bernie Williams drilled a two-run home run over the left-center field wall giving the Yankees a 4-0 cushion. The Bronx Bombers added a run in the fourth inning and erupted for four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning giving them a 9-0 lead. Paul O'Neill and Tino Martinez homered as Aaron Sele's career postseason record versus the Yankees dropped to 0-5. ALCS MVP, Andy Pettitte, raised his career postseason record to 10-5. The defending champions will now meet the National League Champion Arizona Diamondbacks in the World Series.
