2003 WNBA All-Star Game

The WNBA All-Star game was held on July 12, 2003 at the World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden. The game showcased the best women’s basketball players in the world on the world’s largest stage. A pair of Los Angeles Sparks players led the game for the West who defeated the East 84-75. Three-time WNBA All-Star game MVP, Lisa Leslie dominated the first half of play with 17 points in 16 minutes of play. However, Leslie was sidelined early in the second half with a bruised knee. Stepping up to replace Leslie was her Sparks teammate Nikki Teasley. Teasley fell right into stride, chipping in ten points, six rebounds and six assists to take home the MVP honors. The East was led by Tamika Catchings who grabbed 17 points, and the Liberty’s own Tari Phillips who netted 13 points and 7 rebounds. Liberty point guard Teresa Weatherspoon started the game for the East, contributing 3 rebounds and 2 assists in 16 minutes of court action. The West has won all five WNBA All-Star games.

Mayor Bloomberg, Maddie and the New York Liberty welcome the 2003 WNBA All-Star Game back to New York City.
New York City and the New York Liberty have been selected to host the 2003 WNBA All-Star Game at Madison Square Garden. The WNBA All-Star Game will be held for the first time on a weekend, making its national network television debut as ABC broadcasts the event live on Saturday, July 12th.

The WNBA All-Star Game will be marking a return to the Big Apple, the site of the Inaugural All-Star Game on July 14, 1999. WNBA fans filled Madison Square Garden to capacity to witness that historic event five years ago, which included a memorable National Anthem performance by Whitney Houston to open the festivities.
