The Winged Foot Award honors the winning coaches of the men's and women's NCAA National Basketball Championship. The occasion is marked each year at the New York Athletic Club by an awards presentation dinner. The recipient of this year’s men’s award was Bill Self from the University of Kansas and the winner of the women’s award was Pat Summitt from the University of Tennessee.
Summitt earned her second Winged Foot Award after leading the Lady Vols to a 36-2 record this season and a second consecutive national title. The 2008 NCAA Championship victory is the eighth overall for Pat Summitt as coach of the Lady Vols, which is a women’s NCAA record. Tennessee also became the first team to repeat as national champions twice in their school’s history, having won three consecutive titles from 1996-98.
Bill Self captured his first national championship and first Winged Foot Award with his team’s thrilling overtime victory against Memphis in the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. The Jayhawks finished the season with a 37-3 record en route to their first national championship since 1988. Self had also led both the University of Illinois and the University of Tulsa to the Elite Eight during his coaching career.
The New York Athletic Club recognizes that the coaches are the players’ guides both on and off the court during a time when good role models are most important. The New York Athletic Club takes great pride in recognizing and commending the people who make such a difference in the lives of student athletes.
