USTA Wheelchair Tennis
|
In wheelchair tennis, the player must master the game of tennis and the wheelchair.
Learning mobility on the court is exciting and challenging, and helps build strength
and cardiovascular ability.
Wheelchair tennis provides persons with disabilities the opportunity to share in
activities with their peers and family, whether able-bodied or disabled. Playing
wheelchair tennis adds to socialization and the normalization of life after sustaining a
disabling injury. Proficient wheelchair users can play and actively compete with
stand-up players.
Tournaments are held in every major region of the USA, in all sections of the USTA,
and in over 70 foreign countries. U.S. National Championships are held on clay and
hard surfaces - indoors and outdoors; and the U.S. Wheelchair Tennis Open
Championships is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world.
The USTA sponsors two international teams: the Paralympic Tennis Team and the
World Team Cup. Elite men and women wheelchair athletes represent the USA in
venues around the world.
