The Universal Wheelchair Football Association |
Universal Wheelchair Football is an adaptation of American football that
gives any person who wants to, a chance to play and have fun
participating in this exciting sport no matter what his or her ability
and not limited to people in wheelchairs. This is why it is called the
most inclusive sport because players on a team can consist in any
combination of paraplegics, quadriplegics, amputees, visually impaired,
hearing impaired, able bodied, men, women, kids, seniors, etc.
The game can be played indoors in a gymnasium or outdoors on a parking
lot. A participant can use a manual wheelchair, a power wheelchair, or a
scooter. Non-disabled individuals are encouraged to use any wheelchairs
available. If the participant has the ability to catch, they do so. If
the participant does not have that ability, but does have use of their
arms the ball has to hit anywhere from the elbows up. If the participant
does not have use of their arms the foam ball has to hit the person from
the waist up. A catch or a tackle (touch) is only relevant if the ball or
defensive person contacts the person and not their wheelchair.
