The 2002 Mayor's Cup Softball Tournament

Mayor's Cup Softball

Qualifying Rounds: Saturday, September 7, 2002 (All boroughs)
Finals: Saturday, September 14, 2002 (Central Park)

The 2002 NYC Mayor’s Cup Softball Tournament crowned new city-wide champions on Saturday, September 21st. Under the hot September sun, champions from the five boroughs battled it out in Men’s, Women’s and Co-Ed Divisions. The competition was fierce and kept the crowds at Heckscher Ballfields in Central Park on the edges of their seats! Congratulations to this year’s Champions!!

The NYC Mayor’s Cup, in its 7th year, is a city-wide softball tournament that benefits the City Parks Foundation, providing uniforms and equipment for the City Youth Baseball Program for New York City’s youngsters. Qualifying rounds were held in each of the boroughs on Saturday, September 14th and crowned Borough champions in each division. Each Borough Champion advanced to the Championship round.

For the first time in Mayor’s Cup history, two of the Championship games were decided in the last inning!

Reigning Mayor’s Cup Champions in the Co-Ed Division, the Arista Demons, representing Manhattan, battled EDSO All-Stars from Queens. The Demons came from behind to repeat as Mayor’s Cup Champions – the only team to repeat this year!

The Women’s Final was decided on the last out of the game! With two out, bases loaded and down one run, the Cha-Chas, representing Staten Island, were in position to take the Championship in dramatic style. But the NY Power, from Brooklyn, held the Cha-Chas off with great defense and a stunning play at the plate! Next stop for the Women’s Champion NY Power, Sydney, Australia!!!

Not to be out-done, the Men’s Final also came down to the final out. In the top of the seventh inning, game tied, the Destroyers, the reigning Mayor’s Cup Champs from the Bronx, broke a tie game with two unearned runs. Determined to come back, Baseball Plus, the Manhattan Borough Champions, fought back and tied the game. Then with two out and bases loaded, Baseball Plus hit a hard shot to the second baseman; a missed throw brought in the winning run and the team charged the field in celebration of their dramatic come-from-behind win.

New York City Parks Commissioner, Adrian Benepe and Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Sports Commission, Andy Gould were present to enjoy the excitement and awarded the Champions their medals and trophies. Commissioner Benepe congratulated the winners and thanked all the participants for their support of the Mayor’s Cup Tournament and the City Parks Foundation.
