Tugboats from all over New York Harbor, as well as historic tugboats, motored into Pier 84 for the 15th Annual NYC Tugboat Challenge. Lucy Reinauer of Reinauer Transportation, a 4,300 hp tugboat, was victorious in the one nautical mile race. Fournier Girls and the Nathan E Stewart finished in second and third place, respectively.
Following the race, several more competitions were held. Robert IV won the line throw competition with a time of 5.5 seconds. The line throw competition is where deck hands attempt to lasso the bollard and tie off in the fastest time. Mary H took top honors in the Best Looking Tug competition. Urger, a tugboat built in 1901 and one of the oldest working tugs in the country, captured the Best Vintage award. W.O. Decker, a 285 hp tugboat constructed in 1930, once again took home the Little Toot Award as the smallest horsepower tugboat in the competition.
The Tugboat Race & Challenge was hosted by the Working Harbor Committee in conjunction with Captain Jerry Roberts (founder of the event), Reinauer Transportation, and the Tugboat Race Steering Committee. The event attracted tugs of all types and sizes including 2006 overall race winner Lincoln Sea and perennial winner of the Little Toot Award the W.O. Decker from the South Street Seaport.
