Tugboats from all over New York Harbor, as well as historic tugboats, motored into Pier 63 Maritime for the 14th Annual NYC Tugboat Challenge. “Lincoln Sea” of K-Sea Transportation Partners, a 7,000 hp tugboat built in 2000, was victorious in the one nautical mile race which ran down the Hudson River from Pier 86 to Pier 63 Maritime. A pair of tugboats built in 1951, “Dorothy Elizabeth” and “Stamford”, finished in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.
Following the race, several smaller competitions were held. “Stamford” won the line throw competition where deck hands attempt to lasso the bollard and tie off in the fastest time. “Hackensack” took top honors for the Best Looking Tug competition and “Urger,” a tugboat built in 1901, captured the Best Vintage award. “W.O. Decker,” a 285 hp tugboat constructed in 1930, won the Little Toot Award as the smallest horsepower tugboat in the competition.
