2007-08 New Balance Track & Field Center Events - At the Armory |
The centerpiece of the Armory is its Olympic-class Track & Field Center. The 200-meter MONDO banked track is the only facility of its kind within a 50-mile radius of New York City.
The track currently hosts 105 meets annually, with between 500 and 5,000 competitors per meet. Last year, more than 400,000 athletes, coaches, parents and fans from 1,000 high schools and 36 states visited the Armory. Among New York City schools alone, nearly 50 high schools without their own facilities use the track and field center for regular track practice. The facility includes a pole vault runway, an eight-lane sprint and hurdle straightaway, two long jump pits, two high jump areas and a shot put area. The arena seats more than 4,000 people, and those fans have been treated to some classic performances over the years.
The World’s Fastest Indoor Track will host some of the nation’s top high school, college and elite athletes during an indoor track and field season that will consist of 90 meets. Some of the featured events include:
Bishop Loughlin Games - December 15-16, 2007
Over 5,500 athletes from 6 states and 235 schools competed in the Bishop Loughlin Games--the oldest and largest high school indoor meet in the United States. The event kicked off the start of the Armory’s indoor track and field season and saw several meet records fall. Chanelle Price, a U.S. Olympic hopeful from Easton High School (PA), ran the 1,000m race in 2 minutes, 47.85 seconds which was not only a meet and state record, but the sixth fastest scholastic time ever recorded in U.S. history.
Several other meet records were broken as well. Mt. St. Michael’s (Bronx) pole vaulter Brian McGovern set a meet record with a vault of 15’3”. Methacon High School (PA) athletes had an outstanding day as three members of the team established new meet records: Ryan Kraiss (girl’s 55m hurdles-8.04 seconds); Carlton Lavong (boy’s long jump – 22’6.5”) and Wesley Lavong (boy’s shot put – 58’7”). Holy Ghost Prep (PA) athletes set two meet records as Mike Pierce ran the one mile race in 4:35.30 and the Boy’s 4x800m Relay team ran the event in 8:02.50. Colonie (NY) senior Steve Crouse set a meet record in the triple jump with a distance of 48’, 8 inches. Simon Gratz (PA) 600m runner Khaliff Featherstone set a meet record with a time of 1:20.84. Finally, the Chester (PA) Girl’s 4x400m Relay team set a new meet record with a time of 4:00.83.
Marine Corps Holiday Classic - December 27, 2007
The 2007 Marine Corps Holiday Classic featured over 5,000 high school athletes from the tri-state area competing in relays, shot put, high jump and pole vault events as well as boy’s and girl’s invitational 800-meter races. This year’s event featured four new meet records.
Newburgh High School (NY) set meet records in both the Sophomore Boy’s 800m and 1600m relays with times of 1:32.75 and 3:30.35, respectively. On the girls’ side, Rachel Hawks and Emma DeJarnette from Atlee High School (NY) set the girl’s relay pole vault record at a distance of 21’ 6”. In the girl’s long jump relay, Christine Manning and Danielle Brock from Westlake High School (NY) set the record at a distance of 36’ 1½”.
Hispanic Games - January 5-6, 2008
High schools from New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia converged at the Armory for what has become the largest two-day indoor track & field event in the country. One of the weekend’s top performers was Brian Leung of West Windsor Plainsboro (NJ), who set a meet record in the Invitational 3200m run with a time of 9:22.92.
New Balance Games - January 19, 2008
The New Balance Games attracted over 5,000 high school and elite runners from around the world. Chanelle Price of Easton Area High School (PA) set the girls’ national indoor 500-meter record, clocking in at 1:10.30. American Alicia Williams ran the world fastest women's 400-meter race of the year with a time of 53.33 seconds and Andy Baddeley of Great Britain ran the fastest men's mile in the world this year, coming in just under the four minute mark at 3:59.29.
New Balance Collegiate Invitational - February 8 & 9, 2008
Over 2,300 of the nation's top high school and collegiate track & field athletes competed in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. The University of Texas and Louisiana State University captured the men's and women's team titles, respectively. A whopping 28 records were set at this year’s event, including an outstanding effort by Easton Area HS (PA) senior Chanelle Price who set the record in the 1000-meter run with a time of 02:45.76.
Price, a Tennessee recruit, is widely regarded as one of the best 800-meter runners in the nation. She has won four gold medals - two individual and two relay - as well as establishing records in the indoor 500-meter run at the New Balance Games and the 1000-meter run at the Bishop Loughlin Games.
Texas star Leonel Manzano successfully defended his mile title, winning in 3:59.21 to lead the Longhorns to the men's team championship. Texas' Jacob Hernandez also won the 800-meters, finishing in 1:49. The Longhorns finished with 78 points, followed by Kentucky with 58 and LSU with 51.
LSU took the women's title with 104 points, followed by Texas A&M with 62 and Georgetown with 54. The Lady Tigers' LaTavia Thomas won the women's 800-meters in 2:04.66.
Several high school records were set, including the boys and girls 4x800 relay records by Morris Hills High School (NJ) (7:56.42) and Eleanor Roosevelt High School (MD) (8:59.37), respectively.

Pepsi Hall of Fame High School Classic - February 16, 2008
Over 4,000 high school athletes from throughout the Northeast traveled to the New Balance Track & Field Center for the Pepsi National HS Hall of Fame Classic--one of the last remaining invitational events before the National Scholastic Championships. The event featured a staggering 28 meet records. Norristown High School (PA) led the day in record-setting performances with five meet records.
Some of the top meet records set included Khaliff Featherstone of Simon Gratz High School (PA) running the 400-meter in 48.29 seconds and Montoursville High School’s (PA) Michael Keenan sprinting the 55-meter hurdles in 7.39 seconds. New Bern High School (NC) twin runners Anthony and Andrew Hendrix helped lead the team to a victory in the 4x800-meter sprint medley relay, setting a North Carolina state record and establishing the fastest time in the nation this season (7:46.8).

Eastern States Championships - February 26, 2008
High school indoor track and field athletes from Maine to Virginia will compete at the Armory Track & Field Center for the 71st Eastern States Championships. The indoor meet will feature high school boys and girls competing in dashes, hurdles and various runs and relays. The field events include high jump, pole vault, shot put, triple jump, and long jump. The 71st Eastern States Championships will also introduce a new field event to its meet lineup. An invitational hammer throw will be held featuring the top six boys and six girls who qualify.
National Scholastic Indoor Championships - March 14-16, 2008
The National Scholastic Indoor Championships featured the nation's best high school track & field athletes and teams. D’Angelo Cherry of Mt. Zion HS (Jonesboro, GA) ran the 55m in a time of 6.14 seconds, establishing a new national high school record. In addition, Nick Vena of Morristown High School (Whippany, NJ) set a U.S. national freshmen record in the shot put with a throw of 66' 7.25".
Christian Taylor of Sandy Creek High School (Atlanta, GA) posted the weekend’s most impressive performances, setting an Armory record in the long jump with a leap of 25-06.75 feet as well as taking home gold in the triple jump, long jump, and 400m.
Other highlights from the weekend included the Warwick Valley High School (NY) girls team setting the US #4 all-time high school record with a time of 11:44.44 in the distance medley relay which consist of team members running a 400m, 800m, 1200m, and 1600m legs for a total of 2.5 miles. In the 5000m, two competitors each set US #5 all-time high school records as Don Cabral of Glastonbury High School (Glastonbury, CT) ran a time of 14:44.16 for the boys while Chelsea Ley of Kingsway High School (Woolwich, NJ) ran a time of 17:03.79 for the girls.
The National Scholastic Indoor Championships is a USATF sanctioned competition that is open to full-time students in grades 9-12. In addition, full-time students in grades 7-8 who are eligible to compete for their high school team and have met qualifying standards are eligible to compete in the Championships.

Youth Track & Field and Wellness Jamboree - October 20
The NYRR Foundation, the Armory Foundation, and the New York City Sports Commission teamed up to produce the Youth Track & Field & Wellness Jamboree at the New Balance Track and Field Center. The Jamboree attracted more than 1,500 elementary and middle school-aged children who participated in running, jumping and throwing events that emphasized skill and confidence building.
53rd Annual Bishop Loughlin Games - December 16-17
8,500 athletes from 6 states representing 252 schools competed in the 53rd Annual Bishop Loughlin Games—the oldest and largest high school indoor meet in the United States. The event kicked off the start of the Armory’s indoor track and field season and saw two meet records fall. Lindsey Rowe of Benjamin Cardozo HS set a new meet record in the 55m Hurdle with a time of 7.96, besting the old record set last year by .03 seconds. Rowe made short work of the field, pulling away to win convincingly over Chia Hudson (8.17) of the Harvey School. Jonathan Bednarz of Fordham Prep set a meet record with a pole vault of 15’2”. After a shaky first vault, many wondered if Bednarz could break the one-year-old record of 15’, yet the Fordham vaulter smashed those doubts on his second vault, skying over the bar and establishing the new record.
7th Annual Marine Corps Holiday Classic - December 27
The 7th Annual Marine Corps Holiday Classic featured over 5,000 high school athletes from the Tri-State area competing in a relay carnival that included shot put, high jump and pole vault events and boys' and girls' invitational 800-meter races. The highlight of the day came in the boy’s 800m race as St. Peter’s HS (Staten Island) star Lionel Williams broke a 19-year-old national Catholic high school record with a time of 1:52.29, breaking the previous record by three-hundredths of a second. In addition, the Fordham Prep School (Bronx) hurdlers set a meet record, blazing to a 30.89 time in the 4-man relay. They broke the seven-year-old meet record by .35 seconds. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and former mayor David Dinkins, both former Marines, were in attendance.
13th Annual Hispanic Games - January 6-7
The 13th Annual Hispanic Games featured over 6,000 athletes from 200 high schools in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia. This event was the largest 2-day indoor track & field event in the country. In addition to individual awards and accolades for athletes’ performances on the track, 15 “Leaders of Tomorrow” were selected, honoring outstanding Hispanic student athletes from the Tri-State area. This year’s recipients were Jasmine Brown, Charisma Ruffin, Nnenna Nwogu, Leilani Vivao, Nicole Padilla, Samantha Isla, Johnnise Lopez, Marvin Alfaro, Anthony Guzman, Claudia Ramirez, Julia Rooney, Emily Alvarez, Brooke Anderson, Jackie Rodriguez and Lorraine Brancale.
The top performer in the boys field events was Trenton Central’s Devon Bond, who first won the high jump at 6-6 and then went on to set a meet triple jump record of 48-6, knocking out the former Hispanic Games mark of 48-2 by Hillhouse High’s Jeremy Jupiter back in 1997. Other top performers included runners Brendon Jarrett (St. Benedict’s) and Lindsay Rowe (Benjamin Cardozo) and field star Gabriella Baiter (John Glenn).
Millrose Games Trials - January 10
This meet is a time trial for PSAL teams who wish to compete in the 4x400 meter relay at the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden on February 3, 2006. The fastest teams from the trials will represent the PSAL at the Millrose Games.
Youth Track & Field and Wellness Jamboree - January 14 & March 24
The Jamboree will attract more than 1,500 elementary and middle school-aged children of all athletic levels to participate in running, jumping and throwing events that emphasize skill building and self esteem. All elementary and middle school children are welcome regardless of their skill level or whether or not they’re on a team. Representatives from major youth running programs will be on hand to speak with parents seeking programs for their children.
12th Annual New Balance Games - January 20
The 12th Annual New Balance Games attracted over 5,000 high school and elite runners from around the world. Alan Webb returned to the New Balance Games for the first time since 2001, when he ran the first ever sub-4 minute indoor mile by a high school runner. Six years later, Webb returned to the Armory to win the elite men’s mile in 3:56.70—an indoor personal best. Other highlights of the Games included Danielle Tauro (Southern Regional HS, NJ) setting a new Armory record by winning the women’s high school mile in 4:46.13 and Dalilah Muhammad (Cardozo HS) winning the elite women’s 400m in 54.28 seconds. The 8th Annual Marty Glickman Award was presented to Jamaica High School, with 2nd place being given to East New York High School of Transit Technology. Since its inception in 1999, the award has provided a total of $15,000 each year for two area high school track and field programs that best demonstrate academic achievement, community service and school spirit.
Mayor’s Cup Indoor Track & Field Championship - January 27
The Armory Foundation, the New York City Sports Commission, and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation will team up to host the 3rd Annual Mayor’s Cup Indoor Track & Field Championship at the New Balance Track & Field Center. High school track & field athletes from public, parochial, and independent schools are welcome to compete in this citywide competition.
New Balance Collegiate Invitational - February 2-3
Over 2,300 of the nation’s top high school and collegiate track & field athletes from 95 schools competed in the New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational. The two-day meet featured men’s and women’s elite track & field stars competing for individual and team honors. The LSU men and North Carolina women dominated the competition, capturing the men’s and women’s team titles, respectively. Texas star Andra Manson barely missed breaking the meet record of 7-08, with his winning jump of 7-02.50 in the men’s high jump competition. The thrilling 400-meter final was the highlight of the day, as LSU sophomore Xavier Carter set the fastest time by a U.S. athlete this indoor season (on a 200 meter track) with an outstanding time of 46.40. On the first day of competition, Alabama’s Tahesia Harrigan cruised to victory in the women’s 60-meter with an astonishing time of 7.19, the fastest collegiate regular-season time since 2004.
Pepsi National HS Hall of Fame Classic - February 17
The Hall of Fame Classic attracted over 4,000 high school athletes from the Northeast to the New Balance Track & Field Center. The meet was one of the last remaining invitational events before the National Scholastic Championships. The event featured an impressive race from Ryan McDermott (Chaminade, NY) who set a national record in the Invitational 2-mile with a time of 9:11.90.
Winners from the boys’ events included Clarkstown South (NY) in the Varsity 4x200 meter (1:29.97) and Naheem McNeil of Hempstead (NY) in the 55-meter dash (6.59 seconds). For the girls’ events, Chia Hudson from the Harvey School (NY) won the 55-meter hurdle (8.11 seconds), Easton Area (PA) placed first in the Varsity 4x400 meter (3:52.55), and Stephanie Duffy of Washingtonville (NY) excelled in the pole vault (12-06 feet).
Eastern States Championships – February 27
The 70th Eastern States Championships will feature high school students from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.
National Scholastic Indoor Championships - March 9-11
The National Scholastic Indoor Championships featured the best high school track & field athletes and teams from the United States, Canada, and Bermuda. Two national records were set during the meet as Ke’Nyia Richardson of Holy Names (Oakland, California) set the record in the girls’ triple jump (44-06.75 feet) and Walter Henning of St. Anthony’s (South Huntington, New York) set the mark in the boys’ weight throw (86-05.5 feet). Steven Murdock of Shenendehowa (Clifton Park, New York) set the US #2 All-Time record in the boys’ 5,000-meters (13:36.57) and his fellow teammates set the US #2 All-Time record in the boys’ 4xMile relay.
Other highlights included Ashton Purvis of St. Elizabeth’s (Oakland, California) setting the National Freshman record in the boys’ 60-meters (7.49 seconds) and 200-meters (23.55 seconds), Justin Christian of Morrow (Atlanta, Georgia) setting an Armory record in the boys 60-meter dash (6.69 seconds) and Tori Anthony of Castilleja (Woodside, California) surpassing the girls’ pole vault meet record (13-6 ½ feet). Overall, six events broke into the US All-Time Top Five record books, and 14 Armory records and two National records were set.

Armory/NYRR Foundation Youth Jamboree (Season Opener) - October 15
More than 800 students between the ages of four and fifteen attended the daylong Youth Track and Field Jamboree on October 15th. Hosted by the Armory/New York Road Runners Foundation, this was the first Jamboree event of the 2005-06 school year. The Jamboree included dozens of events, including sprints, relays, throwing contests and a long jump competition. In addition to the races there were health screens, nutrition information, and demonstrations provided by local firefighters on how to stay fire safe in winter.
52nd Annual Bishop Loughlin Games - December 17-18
Over 6,000 athletes from six states convened at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory to compete in the 2005 Bishop Loughlin Games—the oldest and largest high school indoor meet in the United States. The meet was held over two days with Saturday’s action featuring varsity girls’ and boys’ events and Sunday’s events featuring freshmen and sophomore events.
The two-day tournament featured inspired performances from boys and girls of all ages, as four meet records were either bested or equaled. Lynne Lane of New Rochelle (NY), defending champion of the 60-meter dash, set a new meet record of 6.99 seconds in the girls’ 55-meters. Lynne followed up her strong sprinting performance with a victory in the girls’ long jump, where she bested the field with an 18’ 3.75” leap.
Meet records were also established in boys’ events, where Thomas Walls (boys track MVP) of Woodrow Wilson (NJ) set a new meet record in the boys’ 55-meters with a time of 6.42 seconds. In the boys’ triple jump, Jason Gross of McDonough (MD) set a new meet record with a 47’ 7.25” jump and Scott DiCesare (boys’ field MVP) of Irvington (NY) tied the boys’ pole vault meet record with a jump of 15’0”.
Team trophies were given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in the Varsity Girls and Boys Divisions. Medals were awarded to the top 6 places in all individual events and the Varsity individual champions received trophies.
Sixth Annual Marine Corps Holiday Classic - December 27
The Sixth Annual Marine Corps Holiday Classic is open to high school athletes competing with their teams. Most of the events are relays, some of which include the shuttle hurdle, 1600-meter, shot put, and triple jump. In addition to the relays there is a boys’ and girls’ invitational 800-meter race. The top three boys and girls teams will receive trophies and the top six relays in all events will be awarded medals.
12th Annual Citibank Hispanic Games - January 7-8
The 12th Annual Hispanic Games featured over 6,000 athletes from 200 high schools in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia. The meet was highlighted by multiple record-setting races. In the boys’ division, Garden City’s Charles White set a new state sophomore record in the mile with a time of 4:16.02. In the girls’ division, Bayshore's Brittany O'Brien edged out Somers’ Kate Cannon in the 1500-meter racewalk, as both athletes eclipsed the previous meet record with times of 6:55.09 and 6:57.22, respectively. In addition to individual awards and accolades for athlete’s performances on the track, 18 “Leaders of Tomorrow” were selected, honoring outstanding Hispanic student athletes from the Tri-State area.
Millrose Games Trials - January 11
This meet is a time trial for PSAL teams who wish to compete in the 4x400 meter relay at the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden on February 3, 2006. The fastest teams from the trials will earn a spot to represent the PSAL at the Millrose Games.
Armory/NYRR Foundation Youth Jamboree - January 15
The first Youth Jamboree of 2006 will be held on January 15th. Children ages four through 15 will compete in sprints, relays, shot put and long jump. Races are divided by gender and age. Highlights will include an invitational 800-meter run for boys and girls ages 10 through 12.
New Balance Games - January 21
The 11th Annual New Balance Games, a track meet for high school students and elite athletes, featured many record-setting performances. In the girls’ shuttle hurdle relay, New Rochelle set a New York State record with a time of 33.55 seconds. The boys teams from Sheepshead Bay prevailed in both the freshman 800-meter and freshman 1600-meter relays, establishing new meet record times in the process. Sheepshead Bay’s boys’ team and New Rochelle’s girls’ team accumulated the most points in their respective divisions.
Elkanah Angwenyi of Kenya defended his title in the men’s open one-mile, clocking in at 3:57.47 and topping his time from last year’s New Balance Games. Hayley Tullet of Wales won the women’s indoor open mile title for the third time, outrunning last year’s winner, Carmen Douma-Hassar, by forty-four milliseconds with a time of 4:29.23. Olympic bronze medalist Ronetta Smith of Jamaica defended her title in the women’s 400-meter dash with a time of 53.03 seconds.
Mayor’s Cup Indoor Track & Field Championship - January 28
The Armory Foundation, the New York City Sports Commission, and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation will team up to host the 2nd Annual Mayor’s Cup Indoor Track & Field Championship at the New Balance Track and Field Center. High school track and field athletes from public, parochial, and independent schools are welcome to compete in this citywide track and field competition.

New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational - February 3-4
95 schools and over 2,300 of the nation’s top high school and collegiate track & field athletes competed in the New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational, highlighted by many record-setting performances.
Meet records were set by the following athletes: Abe Jones of the University of Illinois in the men’s 500-meter (1:01.40); Corey Duquette of Virginia Internmont in the men’s 1000-meter (2:24.35); Aries Merritt of the University of Tennessee for the men’s 60-meter hurdles (7.62); Julianna Reed of the University of Pittsburgh for the women’s 500-meter (1:13.22); Zaia Wharton in the women’s 1000-meter run (2:51.95); Tahesia Harrigan of the University of Alabama in the women’s 60-meter dash (7.19). Shameka Marshall of Rutgers University won the women’s long jump championship with 6.49 meters, setting a new Armory record. Laura Gerraughty of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was named Women’s Outstanding Competitor, as she shattered both meet and Armory records with her 18.47-meter throw--the longest in the United States thus far this season. Louisiana State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill claimed the overall titles for the mens and womens teams, respectively.
The high school portion of the event took place on February 4th. Walter Henning of St. Anthony’s (Long Island) took the title in the event’s first ever weight throw competition, which was a mere 2 feet shy of the current national record. DeMatha Catholic of Maryland broke the previous meet record for the boy’s 4x400-meter relay and set an unofficial national Catholic high school record with a final time of 3:16.39. Suffern High School of New York clocked in at 9:03.36 during the girl’s 4x800-meter relay, which is now the third-fastest time in the nation’s history.
Coca-Cola National HS Hall of Fame Classic - February 18
Many of the nation’s top track & field high school competed in the 3rd Annual Coca-Cola National High School Hall of Fame Classic at the Armory. Brittany Sedberry of Ocean City clocked-in with a time of 10:19.30 in the girls’ 2-mile run—the fastest girls’ mile this year and the 8th-fastest mile of all time. New Rochelle’s Lynne Layne set a new meet record with her time of 7.03 seconds in the 55-meter dash, while Andrew Hanko of Trinity ran the championship boys’ 2-mile run in 9:23.82, breaking the previous meet record. Aaron King set a new meet record varsity boys’ long jump with a distance of 21’ 5 ¾”.
Eastern States Championships – February 28
High school students from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia will compete in the 69th Eastern States Championships.
In 2005, the Colts Neck High School Boys’ DMR team ran 10:15.08 (a 2005 US season best time which placed them 20th on the US all-time list).
National Scholastic Indoor Championships - March 10-12
High school athletes from throughout the United States converged upon the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory for the 23rd Annual National Scholastic Indoor Championships. The three-day meet featured many spectacular individual and team performances, highlighted by a new national record in boys’ weight throw.
The West Catholic (PA) girls’ team recorded the fastest sprint medley relay in the nation this year with a time of 3:57.83. Eighth-grader Brianna Welch of Glen Head (NY) ran a 2:13.14 in the 800m—breaking the 22 year-old NY State record for her age. In the 4x800m, the Suffern girls’ team ran the second-fastest time in U.S. history with a blistering 8:59.37. Finally, junior Walter Henning of Kings Park (NY) bested his own national record in the boys’ weight throw, hurling an 85-foot, 6.25-inch toss to win the event by more than 17 feet.

2004-05 New Balance Track & Field Center Events - At the Armory |
The centerpiece of the Armory is its Olympic-class Track & Field Center. The 200-meter MONDO banked track is the only facility of its kind within a 50-mile radius of New York City.
The track currently hosts 90 meets annually, with between 500 and 5,000 competitors per meet. Last year, more than 350,000 athletes, coaches, parents and fans from 1,000 high schools and 36 states visited the Armory. Among New York City schools alone, nearly 50 high schools without their own facilities use the track and field center for regular track practice. The Armory track website (www.armorytrack.com) presents exhaustive results and records data from meets at the Armory.
The facility includes a pole vault runway, an eight-lane sprint and hurdle straightaway, two long jump pits, two high jump areas and a shot put area. The arena seats more than 4,000 people, and those fans have been treated to some classic performances over the years.

The World’s Fastest Indoor Track will host some of the nation’s top high school, college and elite athletes during an indoor track and field season that will consist of 90 meets. Some of the featured events include:
Armory/NYRR Foundation Youth Jamboree (Season Opener) - October 17
51st Annual Bishop Loughlin Games - December 18-19 - Over 6,000 athletes from six different states came to the New Balance Track and Field Center to compete at the Bishop Loughlin Games. This meet is the oldest and largest high school indoor track and field meet in the nation, and is considered the traditional kick-off of the indoor season. As usual, fast times were run on the Armory track including the second all-time fastest U.S. marks in the Girls’ 300-meter and 600-meter races. Francena McCorory of Bethel High School in Virginia ran the 300-meter dash in an incredible time of 37.60 seconds and New Jersey’s Janine Davis from Queen of Peace High School ran the 600-meter dash in 1:30.00 minutes and was named the Girls’ Track MVP. Julianne Toto of Middletown South High School in N.J. soared 12’ 5” in the pole vault and won Girls’ Field MVP honors and set the meet record. The Middle College High School of N.Y girls’ 4 x 200 m relay team also set a meet record with a time of 1:41.36 minutes. On the boys’ side, James Blocker from New York City’s August Martin High School was the Field MVP with his 6’10” high jump and Sean Cuevo from New York’s Yorktown High School was named as the Track MVP with his meet record time of 6.36 seconds in the 55-meter dash.
Armory Holiday Classic - December 28 - The meet is open to all high school age athletes competing with their high school team. Relays, Relays, Relays!
Citibank Hispanic Games - January 8-9 - Four meet records were shattered and nine U.S high school season best marks were set at the Armory's Citibank Hispanic Games for high school track and field athletes at the New Balance Track and Field Center. Bryan Scotland of St. Benedict’s (NJ) set a meet record in the mile (4:14.35) while New Rochelle's Lynn Lane ran the 55-meter dash in 6.94 seconds--also a new meet record. In both the boys and girls 4x200-meter races, U.S. season best times were run. In the boy’s race, Simon Gratz (PA) ran 1:27.96. In the girl’s race, the Middle College at Medgar Evers team set the national season best time by running 1:40.97. They edged out the Eleanor Roosevelt team, whose time of 1:41.25 was the second best in the U.S. this season.

Elkanah Angwenyi of Kenya successfully defended his title in the men's elite one-mile run in 3:59.38 at the New Balance Games on January 22nd. James Davis of the University of Colorado, a 2003 gold medalist at the world indoor championships, won the men's 400-meter in 46.78. Carmen Douma-Hussar of Canada, winner in the Millrose Games last year, won the women's mile in 4:28.43. Olympic bronze medalist Ronetta Smith of Jamaica won the women's 400-meter in 53.34. The New Balance Games featured 5,000 athletes from over 200 schools as well as elite athletes.
Mayor’s Cup Indoor Track & Field Championship - January 29 -
The Armory Foundation, the New York City Sports Commission, and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation teamed up to host the inaugural Mayor’s Cup Indoor Track & Field Championship at the New Balance Track and Field Center on Saturday, January 29th. New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational - February 4-5 -
There were many impressive high school and college performances at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on February 4-5, national records were set and U.S. season best times run.
High School Races:
The Boys’ 4 x 800-meter relay team from Syosset (NY) High School set a new national record with their time of 7:42.22. The previous record, 7:42.67, was set in 2000 by York Elmhurst (IL). The Girls’ 4 x 800-meter relay went down to the wire, as the team from Boys & Girls High School (NY) battled with Bay Shore High School (NY). Boys & Girls High School ran 9:04.29 to beat second place finisher, Bay Shore, by .22 seconds. Third place finisher Suffern High School (NY) and fourth place Eleanor Roosevelt (MD) were right behind running 9:06.14 and 9:06.75 respectively. All four of these times were the fastest in the US for the season, and Boys and Girls’ time is 3rd on the national all-time list.
Katie Doswell of St. Catherine’s High School (VA) came close to setting a national record in the girls’ 1000-meter race. Her time of 2:47.10 placed her 2nd on the national all-time list.
College Races:
The college athletes were equally impressive. The Arkansas men claimed the team title with 83.5 points. The LSU women narrowly beat out Arkansas and South Carolina to win the team title. The LSU women had 68.5 points, and Arkansas and South Carolina were tied for second with 66.5 points.
LSU freshman Xavier (X-Man) Carter was named the MVP of the meet. He won the 200-meter dash in 20.67 seconds and ran a 46.0 second leg in the 4 x 400 to put LSU in position to win the relay. Defending NCAA Indoor and Outdoor High Jump Champion, Andra Manson of University of Texas, continued to dominate and won the high jump with a jump of 7 feet 2.5 inches.
On the women’s side, Columbia’s Caroline Bierbaum ran 15:52.17 in the 5000-meter race was fast enough not only to win the race by 14 seconds, but also set the school record and automatically qualify her for the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships. LSU’s Hazel-Ann Regis who competed for Grenada in the 2004 Olympics in the 400-meter dash, won the Championship 400-meter dash in 51.62 seconds. In only her second jump of the season Erica McClain of Stanford won the triple jump with a jump of 44’11”. This jump broke the Stanford record, and was the furthest collegiate jump of the season.
Coca-Cola National HS Hall of Fame Classic - February 19 - More than 4,000 athletes from over 200 schools in six states and Washington, DC competed in the 2nd Annual Coca-Cola National High School Hall of Fame Classic at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory. Among the highlights of this year’s meet was Brittany Sedberry of Ocean City, New Jersey running the fastest girls’ 2-mile race in the U.S. with a time of 10:37.02 and Kevin Tschirhart of Northport, New York running the nation’s second fastest boys' 2-mile race with a time of 9:18.15. Krista Simkins of Wissahickon, Pennsylvania turned in the nation's third fastest girls' 400m dash with a time of 54.63 seconds and Colts Neck, New Jersey’s Boys' 4x800-meter relay team ran the third fastest time in the U.S. with a time of 7:51.21.
National Scholastic Indoor Championships - March 11-13 -
The New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory hosted the 22nd Annual National Scholastic Indoor Championships (NSIC) from March 11th-13th. This year’s meet attracted some of the nation’s top high school athletes including eight national record holders, 13 returning national champions and 15 U.S. #1-ranked athletes.
Justin Craddock, a senior at Kenmore East High School in Buffalo, NY, was a surprising winner in the Boys 800-meter run. His time of 1:51.36 was a new state record, the fastest U.S. 800-meter time this season and the fourth best time on the U.S. all-time list. Lynne Lane from New Rochelle won the 60-meter dash in 7.43 seconds, which was a new meet record.
California’s Long Beach Poly set a national record in the Boys 4x200-meter relay with their time of 1:26.09. The previous record, 1:26.90, had been run by New Jersey’s Camden High School in 2004. In the Girls 4x200-meter relay, California’s Long Beach Wilson ran the best U.S. girls time this season with an impressive time of 1:36.82.
Mary Saxer of Lancaster, New York, set a meet record in the girls pole vault with her jump of 13'05.5", while Texas’ Anika McPerson won the girls high jump with a jump of 5’11.25”.

The National Track and Field Hall Of Fame Opens at The Armory
The National Track and Field Hall of Fame will open its doors at the Armory Track and Field Center in Washington Heights, New York on Saturday, January 24th, 2004. The opening of the Hall, the nation's only sports Hall of Fame located in a major city, will kick-off the 9th Annual New Balance Games—highlighted by an elite Men’s and Women’s One Mile Run and a high school Boys and Girls Invitational Mile Run. The National Track and Field Hall of Fame will be a teaching museum, with a particular focus on health, nutrition and fitness. From interactive experiences that use technology to measure athletic capabilities and predict potential, to celebrating such greats as Jesse Owens, Jim Ryun and Florence Griffith-Joyner, the Hall of Fame will pay tribute to all aspects of the sport.
The National Track and Field Hall of Fame, moving from Indianapolis, will occupy 15,000 feet on three floors. The first floor will showcase equipment and history galleries and a 70-seat theater that will show a special track and field history film produced by Bud Greenspan. It will also be used for community events, films, press conferences, theatrical productions and more. On the second floor will be the Fred Lebow Marathon Hall, which is dedicated to the rich history of the New York City Marathon. The third floor will feature a large mural with such track stars as Wilma Rudolph, Bob Beamon, Carl Lewis and Billy Mills and a glass wall with the etched names of the 193 Hall of Fame members.
50th Annual Bishop Loughlin Games - December 20 – 21 - The Loughlin Games are the oldest and largest high school indoor track and field meet in the nation.

10th Annual Coca Cola Hispanic Games - January 10 - Last year, more than 5000 athletes from 150 high schools competed in the Ninth Annual Invitational. The two highlighted events during the day will be the boy's and girl's mile run and 400 meter dash.
9th Annual New Balance Games
On January 24th, the New Balance Track and Field Center hosted the New Balance Games. The highlight of the day took place in the Boys’ Invitational Mile where 7 out of 11 boys ran the mile in under 4:15. Griswold (CT) High School’s Gavin Coombs, with a time of 4:11:35, edged out John Jay (Fishkill, NY) High School’s Hakon Devries, who finished with a time of 4:11.38.
Nicole Blood, a high school sophomore from Saratoga Springs, ran in the elite women’s race on Saturday and broke the New York State record for high school sophomores in the indoor mile. Her time of 4:48.82 ranked her seventh among the top elite female competitors. Nicole, along with other top runners, will compete in the Verizon Millrose Games on Friday, February 6th at Madison Square Garden.
New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational
On the weekend of February 13th and 14th, many of the country's premier athletes came to the New Balance Track and Field Center for the New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational. The highlight of the two-day meet was John Moffitt's leap of 27 feet and 1-3/8 inches in the long jump. The 23-year-old from LSU was unable to break the Armory record of 28 feet and 2 inches that was set two years ago. However, he moved to the top of this season's indoor world leader board, passing Russian Vitaly Fhkurlatov's jump of 27 feet and 1/2 inch.
Other winners included Kierra Foster, a Maryland sophomore, who took the women's long jump at 20'5'', three inches short of the meet mark; LSU's Muna Lee broke her own meet record in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 23.06; and Ashley Couper, who won the women's open 1,500-meter run in 4 minutes and 21.53 seconds. In the high school girls 4x800-meter relay, Boys and Girls High School of Brooklyn broke the meet record with a time of 9 minutes and 6.75 seconds, which is the fourth-fastest time in the nation this season.
1st Annual National Hall of Fame High School Classic - February 21 - This meet is open to all high school teams of all skill levels. High School teams from all over the country will travel here to compete against the best, and visit the new National Track and Field Hall of Fame in NYC.
National Scholastic Indoor Championships - On March 12th-14th, the New Balance Track and Field Center hosted the National Scholastic Indoor Track & Field Championships. This event attracted the top high school track and field stars in the nation to come to compete in New York City. In a three-day event, Reginald Witherspoon highlighted the weekend by setting a new national record in the Boys’ 400-meter Dash. His time of 46.11 seconds edged past Jermaine Gonzalez, who finished with a time of 46.15 seconds. Local athletes also had quite an impact throughout the weekend. After being denied in its two previous efforts, Bronxville High School won the Girls’ 4x800-meter Relay, finishing in a time of 9.07.85. On the boys’ side, Fordham Prep in the Bronx won the Boys 4x800-meter Relay by finishing with a time of 7:50.36. Other individual performances included Xavier Carter’s 20.69-second time in the 200-meter Dash, which not only established the Florida senior as the fastest high schooler ever in the indoor event, but also put him on the list of the world’s best, as Carter’s time was the 10th fastest indoor 200 meters in the world this year.
