Bear Stearns Tournament of Champions 2007

Location: Vanderbilt Hall, Grand Central Terminal, New York City

Defending champion Amr Shabana was crowned champion yet again as his opponent Anthony Ricketts forfeited in the 3rd game of the final after scores of 7-11, 11-3 & 8-4. Ricketts had hurt his elbow and the pain was too much to overcome in the 3rd and final game, giving Shabana, the #1 player in the world, his second-straight Bears Stearns Championship. Natalie Grainger defeated Vanessa Atkinson in the women’s final 9-11, 11-7, 11-5 and 11-7 to capture her first Bears Stearns Championship.

Shabana advanced to the final by beating the tournament’s surprise superstar 19-year old Ramy Ashour in the semifinals. Shabana showed the fan-favorite Ashour what it took to be the world’s best player, winning in three games by the scores of 11-6, 11-9 and 11-6. When it was all over, the experience and skill of Shabana was too much for young Ashour. Ricketts proceeded to the championship by outlasting Ollie Tuominen 11-6, 8-11, 11-1, 11-6.

Previously a two-time finalist, Natalie Grainger final got over the hump with her fast-paced play and outstanding shot making abilities. In a repeat of the 2006 Bears Stearns Championship, Grainger took control of the match after dropping the first set. She would not be denied by defending champion Atkinson this year, proving herself as one of the most elite woman’s squash players in the world.
