Commissioner Podziba and John Carbonel Announce The Move Of The Super Boat National Championship Race To New York City

New York City Sports Commissioner Kenneth Podziba and Super Boat International President John Carbonell announce today that Super Boat International Productions, Inc. will permanently move its national championship race to New York City. The race, which was formerly in the Bahamas around Paradise Island, will now be called the New York Super Boat National Championship Race and will be held on September 8, 2002, on the waters of the Hudson River.

"We are delighted that New York City will be the new home for the Super Boat National Championship," said Commissioner Podziba. "It's an opportunity for New Yorkers and our visitors to experience the thrill of live speed boat racing at the highest level."

Mr. Carbonell has been an innovator in the sport of super boat racing since 1989 when he introduced the revolutionary idea of "inshore" racing. Whereas boats used to race offshore far from the public's eyes, Carbonell's inshore format allows the audience access within fifty feet of the racecourse. Bringing the audience closer to the action has greatly popularized the sport and has led to increased visibility and accessibility for super boat racing.

"After the success that super boat racing has had in New York City for the past 11 years, we felt it was time to make it a championship race. I feel that having the national championship in New York would be a great way to show our support for the city as well as raise awareness and visibility for super boat racing. It truly is a win-win situation for all parties involved," said Carbonell.

The move to New York will also afford a national television audience with the backdrop of the breathtaking New York City skyline; providing a truly unique setting for super boat participants and enthusiasts from around the country.

More than 100 miles of racing can be seen, free of charge, along the Hudson River's edge from Battery Park to 42nd Street. The race starts at 1:00 pm and the awards ceremony is expected to commence at 4:30 pm at the Liberty Landing Marina.
