Special Olympics 20th Annual NYC Metro Tournament

Date: May 31, 2008, 10am - 4pm
Where: Riverbank State Park

The 20th Annual Special Olympics New York Metro Tournament, held at Riverbank State Park was the largest single-day Special Olympics competition in the Tri-State area. Over 1,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities competed in basketball, power lifting, aquatics, track & field, and volleyball.

The opening ceremony featured Mary Pannese and Joanne Certo who carried the torch into the games. Athlete Kathleen Maggi led the athletes in the Special Olympics Athletes Oath before competition got under way.

The mission of Special Olympics of New York is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, including mental retardation. This gives them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship with their families, Special Olympics athletes and the community. Through their participation in Special Olympics, New York athletes gain confidence and build a positive self-image, which carries into the classroom, the home, the workplace and the community.
